You need to really consider the type of fishing you will be doing most often then go from there.... The Rogue River and the Ocean really require different types of boats. Jet vs prop, inboard vs outboard, ying vs yang, you're right too many choices!

Wow, whadda question. My input:

Inboards offer the greatest amount of power. My son Grasshopper many years ago managed to plane my 21 ft. 460 inboard JetPace with 17 fraternity brothers aboard. All drunk. Disadvantage --- weight of the engine. Which means that these engines require greater speeds to plane a comparable hull. They sound very cool though. Vroom!

Outboards are lighter and (in my opinion) more reliable. Less powerful. Lower planing speeds. In a tiller configuration, you best be a bit steady on your feet. I get scared by these.

The Sportjet is an "inboard outboard". Lighter yet, less expensive, more power than the conventional outboard. Motion Marine makes these up as outboards ("outback"). Cool idea, though to me the idea behind the SJ is to move the weight farther forward, making the boat ride more level and thus draw less water. I think this set-up is ideal for boondogging.

Every choice is a compromise. What do you intend to do with your boat?

Just get an outboard w/a jacking plate, now you can run shallower water, Also run the Ocean and pick up a couple MPH. It is alot easier to change an O/B to a prop,or vise versa than an inboard if you change your mind Just My $0.02....Ross

 THINK NORTHRIVER! Only my Opinion. Where are you runnin' on the rivers, and how far off shore. Lots to think about. Does your family plan on wake boarding, water ski, knee boarding, or do you have complete control over the boat? If in fact you do, get a jet!

Spend a couple days fishing in each platform you describe. Each has it's positives and negatives.

How many people do you plan on fishing with?

Inboards are powerful, semi efficient( No jet is efficient. They just burn different amounts of fuel doing the same thing. None are very cheap to run for long) and are usually best in killer whitewater.

The SJ is powerful enough for most. Cold blooded. Accelerates very quickly. And cheap to buy initially.

Outboards offer the most room....At a price. With a jack plate, a pump, and a prop, they offer versatility that is tough to match. They usually get the worst fuel economy. They cost a lot. Especially the new 4 strokes.

Jet pump technology for a 4 cycle outboard has a few holes in the dam. They are fixing most of the problems quickly. But I would not want the first 4 stroke jet of any make and model right now.

The 2 strokes are close to perfection pump wise.

Your laundry list is long. No matter what you buy, at some point there will be compromise. try to buy your most versatile boat first. Saves time and money.

Good luck.

Mark and the dog.

first off, make a real hard decision as to where you want to fish. If it's shallow rivers, then a jet. I figure I had buddies who'd take me on shallow rivers, so I opted for an outboard and prop in the new boat. Most practical for my interests. Went 19' so I could keep it manageble, but big enough for the willy, columbia, bouy 10, and even sneak out to CR and
out of newport or depoe in good weather. Plus all the interior lakes, it's a good fit for me. The right approach is to just suck up to a guy with a drift boat, jet sled, and a seaworthy "big blue"
boat like I have. That way you can fish anywhere,
and share you boat also. It's all about sharing, ya know.

Sorry, no major input on my part. I just had to look.

I didn't know you could put those three words together in that sequence.

Only got six adorning my house/yard/garage.
