Default Sand island shad fishing?

Where to go? Never fished for shad in this area, hoping to avoid the crowd in O.C.. Have
some folks who have never fished that I would
like to take out and get them into some shad.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank
you.

It's pretty simple.

Get yer self a parking pass for SI first. Then go to the boat ramp on the far side of the island, past the nude beach.

Check the ramp and immediate area for logs and drift wood. This was an issue last time I was there.

Go up river about 2 miles and you will see Sand Island. Fish the inside passage, left looking upstream. You should see lots of boats. Put out the bumpers and look for a blue Willie Predator with a Polar bear and the name ******. Pull up good and close and have a blast. .... O.k. maybe not too close. Look for structure or bumps and try to anchor so you are above the area and back bounce to that spot. I think I fished 35' last year and did great.

We fished a 42" dropper with Dick Knights and scented them with Anise. Couldn't keep them off long enough to fish 3 rods. I was the net boy and couldn't hardly keep my wife and son out between fish. They both had to stop cause their arms were sore. I'm sure OC is better fishing and everyone should make that their first choice but you might be able to find fish here too. .

Hope this helps and you are able to get your friends into the fish.

Let me know how you do...

Ray,
That sounds a lot like Coon Island to me.

Tundra,
Take some brass w/ red Dick nites about a hour after high tide. If the boats in the area described are so packed that they could be holding hands; go up to the top of the island and fish (looking up) mid chanel to the right. You may want to go a little early. Saturday there were a lot of boats there. It still isn't near a crazy as OC.

DOO....

Yep,

That's Coon Island alright.

Guess I should have paid more attention to the topic title...

Another place to try is the Shad Rack above The Fishery. The bonus about fishing here is you can take yer quivering shad down below the fishery in deep water and lock horns so-to-speak with the big daddy oversize sturgeon.

Make sure to use barbless hooks when targeting these old timers and use a stout enough rod in an attempt to turn them to the boat.

The fishing on the shad rack can be downright increadible. Watch out for the old pilings or they will give you a heart check and a damaged prop or worse  .

Hope you have a great time....

Does anybody fish around Sand Island for shad? I've never paid attention. I'd assume that it could be productive. Maybe somebody has advice on it.
