I've owned neither but I'd really have to guess the 4.3 would be more efficient.

The inboard must be more economical.

2 of those words don't even belong around each other, Jet&Economy.
The 4.3 should use less fuel though.

The 4.3 will eat less fuel, but the sj will eat less room. The cost of a sj is roughly 1000-2000 less depending on pump choice on the 4.3, which will buy a lot of fuel. I don't know about you, but I put a lot more time on my kicker then I do my big motor.

I have a 175SJ in an 18 footer with windshield and rag top. At cruise (25mph) it burns 4 gal/hr +/- .5 gal/hr on the Columbia. On the upper Willamette running in a stronger current and going 30mph I burn 6 gal/hr. These numbers are hand calc'ed and based on 3 years and 100 hours of operation.

I think they both run on gasoline - not jet fuel.

I have a 4.3 in an 18 ft boat and have guessed about 8 gph fuel consumption in heavy current. On www.willieboats.com in the sportjet section there is a fuel consumption chart. 3000rpm-5.0 gph 4000rpm-7.0 gph 5000rpm-15.0 gph. I know that when I fished Hells Canyon last month for 3 days and my buddy who has a 22ft with a 460 thought my fuel gauge was broke because it hardly moved. One reason I went with the 4.3 is that if I blow it up I can buy a rebuilt long block for $1000.00 and put it in myself. To replace the power head on the 175 is very expensive. Like mikeymoto said, any way you look at it, "boat" and "economical" are not related

I get 6-7 gph cruising at 4000-4200 rpm, which is about 30 mph. Max the throttle to 5200 rpm, and it rises quickly to 13-14 gph at 42-44 mph. 19 ft NR Sportster.

Hardly economical compared to my old 40 hp suzuki, but it doesn't break the bank, either.

SH - I cruise at the same RPM's and my speed is 25mph (gps), but I burn less fuel.
