Default Rod reel setup for Jig fishing?

I want to get a spinning combo for the Jig clinic on Saturday but don’t know what to look for. I have tried unsuccessfully to use my casting rig but can’t seem to get the float and jig out to the water I want. What’s a good rod length? And how about a reel and what pound test should I use for Salmon and Steelhead. I do most of my fishing on the North and South Santiam if that helps. Went to G I Joes and they have no clue as to what I am wanting so I am turning to the wealth of knowledge on this board. Also if any one wants to carpool from the Salem area to Oxbow on Saturday let me know.

Boedy - I would suggest a 9.5 or 10.5 foot spinning rod. This would be an 1143 or 1263 in Loomis or Rainshadow model numbers (or possibly a 1264 if you want it a little heavier for salmon).

If you really have no idea what rod to get, talk to Mark when you get to the jig thingy. I have heard his speal and he knows what he is doing. He had 5 or 6 rods at the one I saw. I am sure he would let you cast his rods so you can get a feel for what he uses.

Nothing like buying a rod in a hurry and not being happy with it. Test a few out and see what you like.

As far as spinning reels, that is a whole other can of worms. Depends on how much you want to spend. You can get an Okuma for $50 on sale, or Shimano has some over $200. Usually with more dollars you get more bearings that tend to be smoother.

I have 20 lb power pro on my rod and love the stuff.

I love my TH Custom 1143, and my Stradic 400.
They are so beautiful, and so easy to cast.
Can't beat it...

First question I would ask you is what rivers do you plan on fishing the most. If you spend a lot of time on big rivers such as the Cowlitz you would want a 10'6" rod or longer. If you're going to be fishing smaller coastal rivers a 9'6" rod would be a better choice in most cases. I plan on bringing several rods for the clinic and if you plan on attneding, you can get an idea of what feels comfortable to you.
