Mowing the yard today in the sun made me think of Buoy 10. Gettin our there in the early morn, clear out, a mixture of stars and earlly light. Thick and humid air. Flat water. A fresh herring goin round and round. A cup full of fresh coffee.AAHHH...thump, thump, thump... Fish On...can it get any better What your favorite Buoy 10 thought?

Re: Favorite Buoy 10 Memory?
This past year just before Labor Day Weekend. Took my 4 kids down. We got 16 Silvers and never got the fourth rod in the water...what a fun fiasco. Though I never expect to see it that good again in my lifetime....it sure would be fun if it happened!!

Re: Favorite Buoy 10 Memory?
I rented a slip for my 23' sled at Chinook one year. I spent the night on the boat and had coffee going when my friends showed up for the pre-dawn run to the Astoria bridge.
I put the stove away but there was still soem hot water in the kettle so I sat it on top of the engine cover and we started to putt out the channel. Our progress was hindered by the low tide and a big charter type boat in front of us. As we slowly proceeded, one of my friends was straining the rest of the water through a Milita filter for another cuppa.
The channel is narrow so I waited behind the big boat until we could turn east while he headed west for Bouy 10. When we were about to have a clear path, I turned to my friend in the back and told him to sit down. He did.
My intention was to give the V8 the gas as we turned through the big boat wake so we would pop up on plane and not bury the nose on the other side of the wake. It worked perfectly and we were on our way when the friend in front looked back and announced, "Jerry is on fire!" I about broke my neck trying to look back and stop the boat at the same time.
My buddy was not on fire, he had just decided to make some more coffee and, despite my warning, had stood up facing aft and was pouring the rest of the hot water into the filter when the power came up and we turned over the wake. He got a good dousing of hot coffee and the chill morning air made the steam coming off his pants look like smoke.
He was none the worse for wearing his coffee and we went on to catch a bunch of big 'nookies that day. Eventually he bought that boat from me and is now as adamant as I am about people being seated when we are about to get underway.

Re: Favorite Buoy 10 Memory?
My fave memory is an early morning by myself down by the bridge. I figured I'd best get my line in the water well before the boat show and do a slow troll into it. I was well north of the bumper boats.
I no sooner got 15 pulls out and kicked it into forward than I had a fish on. I pulled the shifter back to neutral and brought in a nice clipped silver. I rebaited and kicked into forward and at about 10 pulls, I had another one on. This one was clipped too! Now, I'm down to one more fish for my limit and I'm still quite a ways from the pack. So I do the routine again and this time, I hook into a chinook at about 10 pulls. I lost him at the boat.
I spent the rest of the day trying to get my third without success and saw few other fish caught in the pack. What a bite I experienced that day!

Re: Favorite Buoy 10 Memory?
A trip with my dad in '82 ... limit including a 40lb chinook that fought 'til the line cut through his jaw, and then some. (BANANA BREAD!) Same trip included a broken rod holder, broken rod and lost rod (all in about 30 seconds) ... now that was "some fish"

Re: Favorite Buoy 10 Memory?
The best memories are probly from last year as my father in law myself and my wife caught our limits
in forty five minutes up at the bridge nine fish in the boat by 8:00 A.M.Every year in August at bouy ten is filled with great memories as it's the only time of year we all camp out at Ft.Stevens for a week with family and friends.
Good luck,
STRIKE ZONE
P.S. Can't wait till August 17th.

Re: Favorite Buoy 10 Memory?
1) About 10 years ago watching the Coasties in the South Jetty heavy surf doing roll-overs in their 42' self-righter. We kept watching them going over and over after literally strapping themselves upright to the helm. We couldn't help but imagine that they were taking that poor recruit from Kansas on his first boat ride out of Ilwaco!
2) Betting on the first fish, counting 14 pulls and start reeling it up before my buddy got his line in the water!
3) Last year having multiple triples on with three of us fishing - And the challenge of one net! Man it was something else last year, eh....

Re: Favorite Buoy 10 Memory?
Many years back my wife and I went with a friend to Bouy 10. It was after Labor day and the limit was 3 fish each. We got one fish early before the tide change at 14. We got out to 10 just as the tide started to rip in pretty good. It was like you could see the fish coming in with the rip, it got just past us, and all H**L broke loose. We got hits on all rods, fish on 2 of them. It was mass bedlum for several minutes. We did our best to keep 2 rods baited and fishing, which was almost impossible. The fish were hitting as fast as we could bait on the hooks and out again. We had 2 nets, and always had one tangled up with a fish, ans sometimes 2 fish. When the spray cleared, we had put 8 more fish in the box in 21 minutes, the last had to lifted in by hand, nets were both full of fish!!
I have fished Bouy 10 for many years, and that is one memory we won't forget!!

Re: Favorite Buoy 10 Memory?
Where to begin about Bouy 10 experiences?
Well, I'd have to say, as many of you have, that last year brought many special memories on those four fish limit days. Limiting out by 10:00a.m. with three people one morning was awesome, but the most fun was a day we started out on big blue, before coming back to Buoy 10 to finish off our limit.
My son, a friend of his, and me, ran out over the bar to I believe, Bouy 2. We ran into a huge school of 12-18lb silvers. As you all know, the size of the fish last year was amazing!
His friend got sick as soon as we quit running which, in a way, was good for my son and I...(we got to catch all the fish)
He and I picked up two right away trolling, then decided to ditch the hardware and opted to mooch. We went with 2 oz. mooching leads with a standard 5-6' leader with plug cut herring. We pulled up to the Bouy and shut the engine off. We fished like I had in the old days off the charters.
We casted our lines out, let them sink down, and wham we hit fish. We had two double headers in back to back drifts to get us to the 6 fish we were allowed outside. It was like being in a zone of sorts....Mooching with the engine off, with light tackle, is such a great way to catch fish. It's so quiet and peaceful. Such a contrast to Buoy 10....soooo cool! It definitely reminded me of the "good old days" of the 70's and early 80's.
We then came back inside and finished off our limit of 6 more, for a total of 12 for the morning.
My son had never caught fish out there any other way except trolling divers, dodgers, etc. We had so much fun with those double headers on light gear. Being so big, those fish were great fighters and a total blast to catch!
Don't know if we'll ever have another day like that, but do know that we felt grateful for that day and that the memories from that day will always rank among the top for both of us!!! to Buoy 10 and the Pacific!

Re: Favorite Buoy 10 Memory?
I remember in about 85' fishing with my dad at buoy 10. We were trolling and the bite was sporadic. All of a sudden I see a big fin come out of the water and I'm thinking MONSTER salmon. I start going nuts when all of a sudden I'm seeing big fins all around the boat.
My dad then broke the news to me that it was a pod of pilot whales. It was still cool and I'll never forget my initial adrenaline rush when I seen that first fin.
Good memories...

Re: Favorite Buoy 10 Memory?
When I was a wee fisherman I got to go with my dad on many a company sponsered fishing trips 1968 and later. One of My wife favorite pictures is me standing next to a limit big of silvers. I was probably 150 pounds lghter than, and more hair.
Last year I was lucky enough to get two day in a row with Marv from Marvs guide service. First day was the day after they closed down the Chinook. But they upped the limit to four Coho.
We knocked the H ll out of them.
I can only hope that I can give my kids and their kids the same memories.

Re: Favorite Buoy 10 Memory?
How many guys can claim that taking a girl fishing on the Columbia would be an "Ideal first date?"
I did that way back in '86 and we've been fishing together ever since!
That date on the river lead to her becoming Mrs. Hoochie! Didn't score any fish that day but made the biggest "catch" of my life.
Bouy 10 will always elicit fond memories for us.

Re: Favorite Buoy 10 Memory?
The best day I experienced was last year when the limit extended to 4. We put in at Ilwaco and just cleared the A jetty. We stung 5 keeper silvers on the troll from the Green to the Yellow can, turned around and hit the other 3 on the way back in. Total time for the limit for 2 rods took under 45 minutes.
I still love the feeling when I hop the bar and hit the big blue. No tangled lines, no blowing my stack at @$$ holes that have no business out in the mix, and fast and easy limits that the ocean has to offer. Man I can't wait

Re: Favorite Buoy 10 Memory?
Favorite memory at B10 would have to be when I went out with Shaggy and these two other guys. I forget their names.
But anyway, we sure had a great time. I believe we were limited out by around 10:00 or 11:00 am.
I'm sure we hooked close to 30 fish that day.
"Sorry" to the guys coming down the dock, that couldn't get around our mountain of fish.
Come to think of it, there was only one day out there last year that we didn't limit out the boat.
Thank You Bernie!
Ya remember a few years back - coming in to Joe's and talking?
Now look what you've done. You've gone and corrupted your son.
For a 10 year old, he does a great job. Except when you're taking pictures, you need to have him hold up the fish. Oh wait, that fish weighed as much as he did. Never mind
Thanks Again for some Reel Memories that will last a life time.

Re: Favorite Buoy 10 Memory?
Last year was the best fishing I've ever seen at the buoy. 24 salmon to the boat and 9 keepers for 3 rods by 10 am. Doubles and triples. I bought another net just in case it happens again.

Re: Favorite Buoy 10 Memory?
My best memory was August 11th, 1997. Back then, I didn't have a clue as how to salmon fish and had only ever caught a couple chinook in my whole life, nothing over 10 pounds. After trolling divers around most of the day, my dad wanted to try these dumb downriggers we had bought but never used. By sheer luck our downriggers were dropped to the perfect depth and the fish were triggering on AnChovies that day.
The first fish completely stunned me. After fishing sporadically for years, this was the first 20 pounder I saw brought to the boat. I can't explain how excited I was. Well I figured lighting never strikes twice in the same spot, so I assumed we were done. For the next 2 hours, we landed 5 nice chinook lost a couple others and ran out of bait. I caught the biggest at 34 pounds, which I have yet to beat. I didn't see another boat catch a fish during those two hours. What was best is that my dad, my brothers and I all had the same utter amasement and made a good memory we can share in the future.
We spent another 2 1/2 days catching fish with a total of 20-25 fish altogher.
Last year was great, but I will always remember August 11th-14th of 1997.
