Re: Shad in the Slough?
Angle,
Spent sunday afternoon near Coon island. Picked up a few shad but nothing substantial. Forgot to bring my fish finder so I am not sure how many were in the water. We were
dropping Dick nites to the bottom from a boat. Do you know if the tide has much influence on the shad bite?

Re: Shad in the Slough?
No I don't think so..when they are thick, they bite pretty much constantly; at least that is what I saw last couple of years. I'll try the slough this afternoon and letcha know how I did.

Re: Shad in the Slough?
Hi.
Never fished Coon Island before...is it in Multnomah Channel? If not, where?
Thanks!

Yes, Coon island is in the multnomah channel in the bottom half, I think...

Re: Shad in the Slough?
I'd guess it about 4 miles upstream from where the channel dumps into the Columbia.

Re: Shad in the Slough?
Yep, they're there. Spent two hours with two rods, BBQ'd hot dogs, and landed 7. Not thick yet, but definitely in. Was a nice peaceful change to flat water...for a while.
On the way back we hit a completely invisible barely floating log in the middle of the channel that just about knocked my fillings loose. For a moment I expected to see rushing water in teh boat. It looks like minor damage only which makes me love the Mercruiser company...and my semi bulletproof old hull design and fortifications. Maybe I should stick with typhoons.

Re: Shad in the Slough?
Angle,
Going to give it a shot this weekend. Were you dropping to the bottom or casting and retreiving? Where did you fish? Off the point of coon island? We boated a couple of
chinooks down there last week while shad fishing.

Re: Shad in the Slough?
Fish Freak...I was back bouncing with tiny silver and red dick nites. We anchored in two spots on the north side of the island; both spots got fish, although I was suprised that I was marking very few.

Re: Shad in the Slough?
Thanks Angle,
I was salmon fishing at sellwood tuesday afternoon and was marking alot of shad. I am sure that Oregon City will start to show large numbers. If you are down by Coon island this weekend look for me. I have a red and tan driftboat. I saw you and your girlfriend at 3 arches
in early april.I think I will recognize your boat.

Re: Shad in the Slough?
*********, glad your boat wasn't damaged. Last night below Coon there were two submerged deadheads coming down, one on each side of the channel. One was barely showing, then it went fully submerged.
Anyway, can you describe that shad technique a little more please, like how you rig the lead & leader? Do you walk it back and let it sit, or just walk it out then reel back in? THANKS!
We should be out tonite in a 179 Hewescraft
