Fished next to Catch and Eat (Fish and Wish) and Uncle Bob this morning. They went 0 for 1 while my 15 yr old nephew Ryan put on a clinic. A Cracker clinic that is. He could not seem to get a good hook set on the first one, long line release. I set the hook on his second as he was turned around in the boat at the time (13lbs).
He managed to long line release the third one after C&E and Uncle Bob had to go. By this time he was beating himself up pretty badly for not getting the hooks planted in the fish. His dad, Randy, showed him how on the next takedown, one for Randy, 15lbs.
An hour and a half later as I picked up my line Ryan's rod bounced. He picked it up and said he thought we were tangled. I told him we were not as his rod throbbed again. "Set the hook!" Too late. Now he was really down on himself, "I should be limited out".
Some coaching on the proper hook set technique followed. Then his dad hooked up again, 17lbs. I told Ryan we would fish for another half hour, until 6:30.
At 6:28, I told him it was time for the two minute drill, better hook 'em up! He said, "It could happen." One minute later it did. This time he swung for the fences and set the hook for keeps, 16lbs.
For the day we went 4 for 7 on prawn/spinner rigs. Three of the fish hit after the tide turned around 5:00. The three we did not catch we chalked up to experience.
Last weekend was Ryan's first salmon but I think we have a confirmed fishermen on our hands.
Nice to meet Bernie and Bob. Saw B.O.E. troll by. Hi, Roy. As for me, since I started taking those two out we have put six fish in the boat and I have not had a hit. New fishermen tomorrow.
