Objectionable fishing
So, there are a few of you who don't like a few rude fishers giving your place a bad name.
Thanks for the E-mail, Neal and others who thought I was a little hard on Oregon City. I bet everyone on here can relate at least one instance of fishers acting like jerks in many places including OC.
My question to you is how do you fix it? If there is a boat in your line with a bunch of drunken or ill behaved louts in it, what do you do? If you just sit there and ignore them they go away, right?
Wrong, they come back next week with their boat and another boat full of their buddies.
If you see a snag festival at your favorite river and don't call the man, you encourage the behavior.
This kind of behavior, if not objected to can escalate into what you see at certain very crowded places.
Poaching, harsh handling of native fish and indecent behavior thrive in places where no one objects.
How do you object without making an idiot of yourself?
Any ideas?

Re: Objectionable fishing
Calmly and politely for starters.
I know that can be a hard one but it's effective.

Re: Objectionable fishing
I always object to no brainer BS behavior, regardless of "how I look." If you don't at least attempt to correct obvious improper behavior, the ignorant (ignorant is not an insult) ones will never know.
Nothing works on the just plain mean, stupid and anal, who know exactly what they are doing. It's not just OC. Bonneville in the Spring is the same.
One of those, "never used to be that way" things, we all deal with now.
Stay safe and good fishing.
Rick

Re: Objectionable fishing
Avoid conflict first..be the bigger fisherperson...make a call to the State, or as I did last year run your cam..a short video and show it to the Game folks when they show up hours later...sure makes a guy feel good...PS don't get caught filming...that gets real ugly...thank goodness I had a motor on my boat....

Re: Objectionable fishing
In the Dave Johson school of approach, when I got to the garbage hole tonight the big covered white Thunder Jet sled was not parked in the trolling lane, nor did it show. That's the good news.
The bad news is that there was a smaller Klamath or similar boat parked in approximately the same spot. I motored up to them, there were backtrollers all around them, and asked the two occupants how fishing was.
The reply was that things were kinda slow, that they had seen a few get caught. I said, "Really? There is a real good spot upstream a little closer to the bank, and if you anchor there you wouldn't mess up the drift of so many others" They smiled sheepishly but said nothing.
About 15 minutes later though they did pick up their anchor and move out of the lane. I was over a few boats but made sure to thank them for moving. They ignored me...
Now, maybe they moved because they had more conscience than the guys last night. Or maybe they moved because they didn't have a 24' Thunder Jet and everyone could look them in the eye. But something worked.
PS Fishing was OK for the hogline tonight, but really sucked for the trollers! Pilar, you missed nothing in OC tonight except for the sea lion and beaver..

Re: Objectionable fishing
With a smile and offer to help them to figure it out.... SOON ....
J/K
Usually if you're nice it will go a long way, but sometimes the mentality you face out there is not so nice. If one boat is out of line, usually the others will shape them up, or ship them out.
Unfortunatly with no real "written rules of the water", and an explantion of how to fish it, most just guess, or figure that all those boats doing the exact same thing at the exact same time are just plain strange
