First Blood-if my father reads this I\'m toast
Having bought his new 19 Ft. NR SP 200SJ a few months ago my Father has spent quite a bit of time trying to get the stink off his new boat. Well, yesterday he and my Mother were out trolling on the main stem below the Lewis somewhere when they finally tied into one. Well, with this first fish comes a story as it was told to me:
Trolling sardine wrapped K-15’s. Two lines out. My dads rod goes off and the fight is on. He asks my mother to reel in the other line. As she begins to bring in the other Kwikfish, the reel fall off the rod. Although my father has been fishing for the last 50 years or so my mother, God bless her, has only been out a handful of times and is not really up to speed on what to do when. She continues to pull the K-15 in by hand and now there is a pile of line on the deck.
Having "secured" the rod, my father asks my mom to get the net out. One problem. The handle and the net are not attached to each other. The fish, now to the side of the boat, turns out to be a native so my dad says to forget the net and hand him the hook remover.
Handing the rod to my mom he leans over the side and tries to remove the hook. The Salmon, now rested, tries to turn its self inside out and buries the other 2/0 Owner cutting point treble hook (which his loving son put on the kwikie a couple trips back) into his hand.
It gets worse.
My mother who has been lifting on the rod to help keep the fish a little bit out of the water somehow manages to cut the leader on the gunnel somewhere and now my dad is free form fishing with one treble in his hand and the other in a less than pleased 25+ pound native Chinook.
This does not end well.
The fish performs the time honored “I will be leaving now” maneuver ripping the cutting point hook out of my dad’s hand and disappears into the murky depths of the CR along with the Kwikfish.
Mom goes for the first aid kit as my Dad proclaims first blood for the boat.
Mom wishes he wouldn’t proclaim all over the deck.
During the fire drill my Mother managed to snap a picture.

Kinda reminds me of the 'eye for an eye' mentality. News at 11 "Fish fight back!"
I hope he heals quickly and pass along congrats for the first fish.

Re: First Blood-if my father reads this I\'m toast
Ouch! I hate the story that Bill tells me of a Kwikfish and a chum. He ended up in the hospital. He had been guiding, and the client had to get Bill's boat, AND Bill to the hospital, mid trip.
Thing is, these hooks did not come out of Bill's hand. They were stuck tight and the fish was very, very much alive and wanted to depart, also!
ARGH! The very reason that I am shy to release those salmon. I just pitifully yell, "HELP!"
Yip, I'm a hook sissy.

Great story (well, for everyone 'cept your dad).
I bet he'd really appreciate a gift of this hook extractor shown in Pete's post here:

Re: First Blood-if my father reads this I\'m toast
OUCH !!
That brings back the memory of getting smacked in the head with an old bass plug. My son was bored with bait, so he decided to try the plug while trout fishing on the upper Clackamas. He buried two hooks in my head, and boy did the forest rangers die laughing when I had them cut off the plug.
Hope your dad enjoys his war story over a beer!
