Well, we managed to get some tuna blood on the “Secret Island” yesterday. We’ve been watching the warm tongue of water develop out of the central pacific for the last month. We (John ‘Fish-a-Holic & Myself) had an opportunity to go look at the water last week when OHSU hired the Secret to locate and retrieve a weather buoy they had lost control of.
The interesting fact of looking for the weather buoy had been the opportunity of proving the fact that NOAA and Terrafin’s SST’s we’ve been watching were really the right temps. Last weekend the SST’s said we would find the warmest water of Garibaldi around the 124 30 line, and by-gosh, that’s what we found. The warmest the water ever got was a cool 57.5, and then continued to cool the further we went. The SST’s showed the water only continued to cool so we had confidence when we arrived at the 124 51 line with 55.5 degree water, we weren’t going to find any tuna last weekend. While debriefing back at the dock, and also watching the SST’s over the week (ones we knew we could now take to the bank!), we thought Saturday looked like an oppor-TUNA-ty! We saw there was some pretty decent looking water at the 45 00, 125 00 crosshairs, but we weren’t sure if the water actually connected to the warm water tongue from the central pacific. This tongue is truly the lifeblood of our fishery because it carries the necessary water temps to our coast along with our little silver friends. We still figured this was the spot to start looking. A plan is hatched! We decided to depart Garibaldi at 9:00 to 10:00 p.m. Friday with a plan of fishing south until we actually found the albacore party! So we started following our plan with preparations and iced and fueled the boat, bought supplies, and allowed John to bring way to much fishing junk to the party. We said goodbye to the wives, and that we hoped to be home by Sunday night at the latest, and off we went! We met at the dock at 9:00 p.m. along with Tron’s new deck hand Vince (don't worry, master guide Chris Powers comes in next weekend!) and proceeded to ease our way out to the 125 00 line hopefully to arrive by daylight. We motored on the slow boat to the southern crosshairs (Garibaldi style!) and arrived right at 5:00 a.m. Surprisingly we had crossed the most life in this area at gray dawn at the 45 02, 124 52 to 124 55 line, but we waited to put the jigs in till we arrived at our appointed waypoint. We saw less life at about 58 degrees. It was a tad cool, and seemed to get cooler as we motored south. We had set a southern goal of the Oregon/California border. There is a beautiful warm section of water starting at the 42 53, 125 11 line, and extends all the way to the 126 ??. We knew this section of water would be holding, but we also thought of several spots that looked like they had potential between the Southern Crosshairs and the 43 degree line. We spent Saturday motoring down the line with sections of intense life, lots of birds, schools of pacific white sided dolphins and whales, but nary a glimpse of our quarry. I have a Furuno system on my boat that I have learned to truly trust and I almost always see the fish on the scope before I hook them. So as we motor through these sections of life we intensely watch the temp gauge and the scope for signs. They just never materialized. Saturday evening around 5:00 we are beginning to get disheartened. We aren’t as far down the line as we hoped, and with a Sunday evening eta at the Tillamook Bay Boathouse, we aren’t sure we are going to make it to our warm water line. We sat down in the wheelhouse and talked out our strategy. The water seemed to be “showing” slightly colder than we remembered and we weren’t positive anything connected from the warm water to get us close enough to find some of those early northern pushing albies. After an intense discussion of the merits of less haul a*& downhill, to “let’s call the wives and tell em we broke down!” John actually remembered he’d saved one of the SST photo’s on his laptop. We pulled it out and went over it again. What do you know, but it helped us determine we were on the right path and should just continue our course. At 6:00 p.m. we started to see a bit of life, our water temp was a solid 59.1 and we were marking some fish that looked like they COULD BE tuna??? John looked back at this point and yells fish on!! We had found them! Holy cow, our quest might actually be fulfilled. We ran back to the back deck and landed a beautiful 15 pound silver bullet. High Fives all around and maybe even another silver bullet to celebrate. We continued our course south and caught another 9 tuna, and missed 5 or 6 others. It was far from epic, but we also figured we were actually on the most northern batch of tuna in Oregon. Who knows, but it sure sounded good, like maybe we even knew what we were doing! As we continued our long troll south the weather really took a nasty turn. The wind gusts came up and soon we were rocking and rolling in a 6’ wind chop. The realization we had accomplished our goal, and we were 152 miles from the jetties, and would be pressed in this mess to get home by our allotted Sunday evening. We grudgingly (sort of….We were stoked to have accomplished our goal!! Even though we had motored a long way over 20 hours, one hour of fishing turned out to be worth every penny!!!) turned the boat around and started up the line for home. You know the best part? We figured if we hadn’t caught fish by 6:00 p.m. on Saturday we were going to have to give in and throw our bananas and beer overboard! Hurray for us, we got to keep them too….. BTW- We will arrive at the Tillamook Bay Boathouse at approximately 12:00 p.m. today (Sunday). Come say hi and share a beverage and fish story with us!! Look for the red/white Delta with the Tuna Flag Flying!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Sorry for the messed up post. Guess I should wait until I'm not bouncing around at 50 miles out trying to type on my laptop!! Don't Forget, John and I have a Tuna Seminar at Fisherman's Marine at Delta Park on Wednesday Evening from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. We are covering Tuna Trolling Techniques, How To Find Tuna, and How to Convert Your Tuna Bites Into More Fish at Every Single Stop! Come join us for a fun evening. We will have some free raffle items for people joining us on Wednesday from Rapala, Storm, and VMC. Last edited by SECRET ISLAND; 06-28-2010 at 01:52 PM. Reason: Messed up pics... |

Wow I just did a grid check of where you were at. 125.11.00/42.53.00
That was a long ways south.

ENCOURAGING REPORT! (AND GREAT PICTURES!) Soooo, how far south and west were they? I fish out of Charleston and Bandon, but (I'll have to look) that seems a bit further south than those ports. Thanks for the intel!

Thanks Mikey! We had a good time! Vince turned out to be a great deckhand! Good kid to have around. He's going to make a great fisherman/captain some day!
We were southwest of Charleston, about a 50 to 55 mile run. It was well runable from there. I think you might even find some closer after looking at this mornings SST's. Good luck!!

Nice work on the Tuna. Are there any pictures of the buoy retrieval? I presume it was one of the 3 Meter disk type? Was there a radio beacon to help run it down?

Good job being the first ones of the year to nail some albi!!!
Question though, it's hard to tell from your photos, did you ever find any "BLUE" water or was that almost there type of stuff? WD.
