Default I am afraid to buy a spinning/rod set-up!!!

What if I like it too much? What will I do with my $300 casting set-up? I hear you can do everything with a spinning set-up. You can cast floats, spinners, and use it like a drift set-up. I am afraid..... Help!

I bought a whole bunch of spinning gear awhile back when I couldn't get the hang of my baitcaster. Now that I've learned to create a birdsnest on every 5th cast instead of every cast, I'm thinking of going back to all casting reels.
The advantage is letting the line spool while you thumb it and still feel the lead hitting the bottom. Try that with your spinning reel.

It's true. I really enjoy fishing for steelhead with a light spinning set-up. That's what I use most of the time in low, clear winter conditions and for summer fish.

You can always alternate rods so one doesn't feel left out.

Buy a really expensive Shimano reel and a Loomis IMX. That will make sure that you don't buy too many setups.

You can get a Berkley Buzz Ramsey IM7 8-12lb. 9'6" on sale at GI Joes Spinning rod w/ an Okuma Epix 30 spinning reel and have about $120 invested. Perfect for bobber/jig fishing.

Get that spining rod and reel. It is just another fishing tool, use the right tool for the job at hand. .. I always take a bait casting reel and a spining reel set up when I go steelhead fishing. If I have to fish close to brush ( junk close behind me )or what have you I use a spining rod & reel. If I can wade out or there is no brush around I will use my bait casting rod and reel. Both have their place. One place I hike into I have been known too pack 4 rods and reels--- 2 of each. Always nice to have a spare when you hike in a long ways, just hate to mess up a good trip by a rod or reel going haywire.---- Buy that spinning rod and reel you won't regret it. If you want a true line cutting birds nest, try makeing a real long cast where you put some umph behined your cast and hook something behind you BIG BIRDS NEST. ------ For picking out a BIRDSNEST get a small crochet hook, works wonders.

yarn,

Might as well get both. You need both. You don't want to be tossing spinners for salmon with a spinning setup and you don't want to fish with a wad of lead and a Nerf-football sized float when jig fishing. With both setups in your arsenal, you'll have your bases covered better.

I have seen a lot of posts with fish and spinning/jig set-ups. They all look like STUDs to me. I wouldn't mind being called a wussy if I caught a lot of fish. I just would't recommend you coming up to someone with a spinning reel and calling them a wussy. It just might be me!!! I have used a Shimano Curado and a good casting rod for years. I have never had a problem with any application used on the river. My friends who use spinning gear seem to like it, however when I am standing next to them watching them pull out spun up line from the spinning reel it makes me even more greatful.

I am sticking to what I have

I agree partially with Jimh. A 1082imx with a Stella is hard to beat. But, the part about not wanting to buy anymore is hard to beleive. Now I'm contemplating buying the new imx1141c with the new calcutta te dc. If it's new and it's tight, I gotta have it. I just dont like the idea of dropp'n a grand every time I get that urge to buy something new for fishing.

I think if you try the spinning gear very much you will really like it. I was a true blue cast gear fisherman for alot of years and then started using spinning gear again alittle and now I`m going almost 100%. If you learn how to fish with it you have more feeling and more controle then you ever did with a bait caster. You can cast everything from strait eggs or crawdad tails (with know wait) to big spinners and not have backlashes. I have 2 Berkley IM7`s 8 1/2 footers and love them. $59.99 Cabelas can`t beat that. I hate spin gear myself. I don't really hate it I've just learned to tolerate the spin gear I use when I'm jig fishing, but I've always preferred a baitcaster. Yeah, yeah......I know you can fish jigs with a casting reel, but you can't really do it the way I like to jig fish. Same with sidedrifting.......you want a spinning reel.

You could fish your whole life with a casting setup or a spinning setup. But that's no excuse not to buy both.

I have several old Mitchell 300's the old French made jobs. Had a couple since high school that still catch fish.

I like them so much I named my first born after them.

Thank goodness the first one was a boy or she'd have hated the name Mitchell. I guess I could have named her Penn-E after my other favorite reels my Penn's.

Seriously, I can think of only 2 applications for a spinning set up:
#1: Tossing something so light my Curado BSF can't handle (unlikely).
#2: Cannot master a casting reel.

I fished with several spinning outfits when I began this hobby, then nervously switched to a casting setup. After mastering it I went out & bought 2 spinning rods/reels thinking I would actually have a specific use for them. Gave them away since they were gathering dust & taking up precious space in my "tackle room". The control & "feel" of a levelwind is preferable in 99% of the time.

The weird thing I could not get over was that I reel a levelwind with my right hand & reel with my left on spinning gear. It's the same motion but feels so odd when switched.

I think spinning reels are ok until you get good with a baitcaster. But once you are good with one you can do everything a spinner can and more. The biggest downfall of a spinner to me is on strong fish such as steelie's and salmon your line takes a beating going over the roller. I am not speaking of super braids here but mono. copolymer and florocarbon that will curl up with more memory than a french poodle!

Buy 2

I got mine originally for kokanee trolling but they work well for small stream steelhead. Too bad I'm not still in Bremerton I could let you try one out. One was $160 and the other was $140 at Blackbird in Medford (a closeout sale).

I like spin rods for bobber/jig fishing for steelhead and boondoggin eggs for steelies.

I'm looking for a good 9 1/2ft steelhead spin rod/reel for myself. Be floatin bobber/jigs, spoons, spinners and doggin some eggs.

I've used spinning for steelhead for over 20 years now with the 9 ft and longer rods and I believe have been quite successful at it. Presently I'm using a 9 1/2 ft Lami(4-10) and a 2500 stradic(8 lb line 6 lb leader). (awesome setup)
When it comes to using light line and weights, especially in lower water conditions I believe it's unbeatable. Plus you have less belly in the line which increases your sensitivity. And with the longer rod you get such a cushion for the line that hooks do not tear out as easy and you can really put some pressure on those fish. Like they've said above you can go as thrifty as you want to try it or buy a more expensive rod made locally from an IFISH sponser with a better warranty. Tight lines

I have several of both casting & spinning outfits and I love them all. I have spinning rods from 7ft to 12'6" in length and I seriously believe that when drift fishing I miss allot of hooksets with a baitcaster just because they do not have as natural of a feel as that of a spinning rod. My hookset is also much faster with a spinning outfit. I can also cast delicate bait farther without tearing it up with a spinning outfit. I do not think gear or fishing has anything to do with "how you look holding it", if it cathes fish I will use it. And I have found my hookup ratio to be better when useing a spinning outfit. I have everything from the limpest of slow action long noodle rods for steelhead on up through heavy fast action for Salmon fishing in spinning outfits and casting both (I qualify as a collector I think). So if you would like to meet up sometime and try a wide variety of spinning rods let me know, I have slow, med, fast, action rods in lenghts from 7ft-12'6", I have both glass and graphite (dont let anyone tell you glass is junk either), for drift fishing (depending on the drift) in allot of cases I prefer glass over graphite simply because it is less sensitive and can make a hit really stand out (I have one cheap glass rod I truly prefer over every graphite I have for drift fishing, cost for that fod & reel was around $50.00) a good fisherman can catch fish on any rod & reel you hand them, cheap or spendy. (but collecting gear is fun, and you always have extra gear for a friend to use). Almost all of my spinning reels are Quantums in the $20 -$30.00 range (mostly Quantum SS4 snapshot reels) and I have never had one fail or let me down in any way. For Baitcasting I go buy nothing but Ambassadeur reels, they are very well built and if treated right will last a liftime plus they are very smoth casting and easy to tear down and clean.

Try casting a shrimp tail with a bait caster and then try it with a spinning reel. People clain they can cast a bait caster with little to no weight. I have never seen that. I use bait casters in my boat diving bait, and also in the fall bobber fishing on the tidewater streams. Maybe you will maser casting if you spend alot of money and buy the best bait caster out there. Go buy your spinning setup. A 9'6 is a good all around rod. Maybe buy a medium action and you could probably catch coho on it too.

Not a problem, just cast your Bait cast till it birdnest, pick up your spinning rod do the same and then sat on the bank and untangle both, because being there is what its about. And if you really want to have some time just go to one of your FAST CASH type stores and buy a hand full of rod and reels and stay all day. Ray

I've still got my original 1960 Pflueger Akron bait caster (with no wussy free spools or thumb-saving drag systems, ) -- which I still use sometimes, plus my 1962 vintage Mitchell 300 spinning reel -- which I still use sometimes, plus plus a WHOLE lot of "new and improved" gear of both types, plus mucho fly gear, surf and ocean gear, sturgeon equipment, 30 years of kid fishing gear, and a 14-foot, 3-piece, Arkansas-type bamboo "pole" (without guides or reel,) -- all of which I use, when appropriate. (And don't even ask about the 5-foot-long, bamboo "salmon boat rod" I inherited, which I can bend perhaps one inch, with both hands, over my knee. )

The only thing I think I'm currently lacking is a handline -- or maybe two. (One suitable for casting/throwing off a round spool (tin can?) of some sort, and the other just hand-windable for bottom fish jigging in a Vancouver Island kelp bed, perhaps.)

And one of my earliest fishing memories was "fly fishing:" dangling a plastic spider on a hook and 10-inch-long piece of leader from my hand off a footbridge over Vancouver Washington's Burnt Bridge Creek, about 1960. I don't seem to recall any success with that method.

The only thing I think I'm willingly passing up is the Snoopy rod. :depressed:

It's all good.

And "Tackle doesn't make the fisherman."

However, anybody who claims he can do "everything" with a baitcaster that can be done with a spinning reel, (like two BB shot and a couple of single salmon eggs on 6-pound-test) is the same guy who's telling me that he's "still the same man at 65 that he was at 20."

Perhaps we should be asking his wife.

Man, you can sure spot a week when it's too #&%*" icy to go fishing!

Relax, take a deep breath, feel around for your wallet and then buy one of each:

Ultralight thru surf rod and reels in both spinning and baitcast.

Hook your boat to your 4x4 with camper and head for the coast and work your way East.

By the time you have properly fondled and worked thru all of them you may be forgiven and able to go home.

When it is cold, spinning set-ups are easy to cast. Plus it is harder to get a birds nest and you can cast lighter tackle.

Get good with both of them and it will make you a better fisherman. For casting in tight quarters and having to get under a limb, a spinning rod CAN'T be bear. Try a "bow and arrow" cast or a "skip" cast with a level wind and tell me how good you are!

Keta, my experiance is that due to how I hold the spinning outfit I get a much quicker, harder hookset. And I miss far fewer fish useing a spinning outfit. Just my personal experiance.

And Paddlefish is right, you will not toss two tiny splitshot and a couple of single eggs with a baitcaster like you will with a spinning outfit. And I do prefer a baitcaster for pitching heavy stuff like fall chinook bobber gear.

Yarndog, if you are using maxima on your casting reel, or something else heavy, that could be your problem, I know it was mine. It is 20 times easier if you switch to trilene iits either like sensithin or something like that(they just changed the name on it). That solved all my problems. I just had too much trouble with the heavy lines, but the trilene works great! I still use maxima leader though. Hope this helps.

I got some spining reel and rods for my three boys, ages 9, 11, 13...about three years ago thinking that the bird nests would be fewer.

Boy was I mistaken...I less nests, but they are easier to undo...when the boys use baitcasters.
