I'm boat deprived at the moment... Is there decent bank access (and chance of success) on the Wind? Thanks! Temporary Bankie

Hey Mack Slayer,

I see you are from HR. I too live in the Hood. It is a little early for the Wind off the bank. We fished up to the falls two days ago thinking that some fish may have been sucked up by the high water. No luck. They will catch a few here and there, but this run of fish is known for making a big push up the river in mid may. Access is limited by lots of pvt property. Throwing plugs off the west bank of drano is a pretty good bet right now. Sometimes it can be better than doing the circle jerk in a boat.

What about camping in the area? I haven't been able to spot any likely looking spots in my Gazateer. Either side of the river within 30 minutes of the putin would be fine.

We are hard core weekend warriors and would probably arrive on a Friday evening after the lovely drive down I-5 from Seattle. Not having the time to search out a decent campsite, it would be nice to have a particular place in mind.

If you like you can e-mail me at ifishthere4iam@hotmail.com

TIA

There is a county park not more than 1/2 mile from the launching ramp. If the park is full they have a parking lot for overflow. Can't tell you for sure what the price is but remember that it was pretty reasonable when I checked into it.

Fisned the wind early AM .. and was very very tough to fish by 10am (lots of wind and white caps) .. Got one around 7:30am on a orange prawn w/ green rainbow tipped brass #3 spinner. had another pull on the same rig up an hour later. Didn't see a much going on but there were a few fish caught by the time we left at 10am. The wind water was clear and 42 degrees, the columbia water was not (pretty murky 1.5 ft vis and 47 degrees.... probably 40 boats or so.

Stopped by L&C on the sandy.. sandy water had a good green w/ a tint of silt... but very fishable... drift boaters at the launch had a few steelies....

We ran down to the mouth and trolled around... everything looked good on the sandy side of the water line but didn't look like much was happening, and nothing did happen. Scooted on down to the hogline in the columbia below the sandy... they said nothing yet and that was at 1pm....

All and all i'm happy i got one... and am not to sure what i'm going to do in the AM .... good luck...

Fished the Wind last night from 6pm till dark with nothing didn't see much going on either. This morning saw 2 taken at daybreak in the channel just west of the point the bankies fish at. Hooked one around 8am on an orange mag wart with hering scent at the buoy boundary, ended up loosing him and had no action the rest of the day. water has cleared up though.
