Default Downrigger

I've never trolled for Springers in the Columbia before but I plan on trying it soon. I got a downrigger that I used to troll for Macks up at
Odell Lake. Can that be used for Salmon trolling
too or is it too shallow? I just don't like fighting all that lead along with the fish.

Default Re: Downrigger

MicroFish,
I fish the Columbia at least 2-3 times a week. I have a Scotty 30", have used it @ Astoria, but so far not in the St. Helens area. I did see a small boat today w/downrigger. I agree w/ keeping all the junk off the pole. I would think you could use the arm if you had a good depth finder, and could be quick to bring it up if necessary. I'm going to give it a try, but will use the absolute minimum weight necessary. I have a big Pro Troll blade I attatch to the ball, however it probably would be too much drag w/o the big weight. It would probably be fine in the channel (possibly trolling for seals, sealions.
