Biggest Springer Ever?
What is the biggest CR springer you guys have ever caught?? Or at least the biggest you've seen caught?? And I dont mean historical reports....I managed a 31 plus last year, weighed at GI Joes. Are they ever bigger than 45?

Re: Biggest Springer Ever?
There was a famous fisherman that guided from the bank in the Portland area and his first name was "Rich" and he was known affectionatly as the "bank maggot". He got a 60+ pound springer on the Clackamas that was on the cover of an STS magazine or I would have never believed it..
Any one else remeber more details?

Re: Biggest Springer Ever?
That big Clack springer that Terry caught was 55 1/2. Caught in '84 I think.
I think I remember a seeing in the paper a 51 or 52 caught by a guy by Sellwood once too.
Biggest for my boat was caught by a client a couple years ago from the Clack and it was 37. My personal biggest springer also came from the Clack and it was 33.
The Oregon state record chinook was caught in something like 1918 and it was 82 pounds. I have heard that it was caught in May so I guess that would have made it a springer too. That one was caught from the Umqua.
The June hogs that once ran the Columbia were a late form of spring chinook and they would reach into the 60-80 pound range.

Re: Biggest Springer Ever?
Biggest one I did was 36 on the Clack. Here's a pic of my friend Dave with a 35 pounder he got last year on the Columbia. He lost one just before this one that straightened out his hooks on his Kwikfish!
There's gotta be bigger ones out there

Re: Biggest Springer Ever?
I've got two over 40lb. And I'm sure lots of coastal fish that were right at 40 that never hit the scales. Coast springer grow bigger cause they have less distance to travel to spawn. Of course this was when you could keep nates.
One 43 on the Trask in june of '87
One 42lb @ McGiver park in '93

Re: Biggest Springer Ever?
All you guys are way out of my league. My biggest was a 32 lb hen caught just inside the dead line on the Sandy. That was in 1996 when the Columbia was high and dirty and the Sandy was low and clear. My boat was anchored right next to the bank where the Sandy and Columbia were mixing. At the time I thought I had caught the mother of all the rest of them!

Re: Biggest Springer Ever?
The biggest I've caught was when I was about 15 with my dad and never knew that 41 was big.. Since I've never touched the 40 mark and have landed 3 that went 38 on the scale, 2 from the columbia and 1 from the lewis...

Re: Biggest Springer Ever?
Just wanted to know if the account I heard about the fish that Seamster caught was true. I heard it was hooked at Hi Rocks from the bank bobber fishing and he jumped into a guys boat to finish it off. Anyone know the real story?

Re: Biggest Springer Ever?
I know the real story because I was there that morning and watched him hook the fish. He hooked it at the tip of high rocks and played it down to pot rock then jumped in Koler's boat. Koler netted it for him some time later. Took him over a half hour to land. Evidently he had a bad backlash in his reel and was very lucky to land it. It was a gargantuan springer...biggest I've ever laid eyes on. I've been told it was the biggest ever caught out of the Clack.

Re: Biggest Springer Ever?
My biggest was out of the old Stayton hole on the Santiam, when you could walk up there from the bridge. It was 42lb. I hear they are going to open that bank back up to the public.

Re: Biggest Springer Ever?
I've only been fishing for Springers for 9 years now and I've boated somewhere between 120-140 and the biggest keeper was 27 lbs. Released a native 3 years ago that was probably 30-32 and one of my best friends got a 35 fishing right next to me last year - to date that's the biggest springer I've ever seen. The guy who taught me how to fish for them has cought them steadily for 26 years and his biggest is only 32. I'd sure like to see a 40 from the MC, Willamette or Columbia!

Re: Biggest Springer Ever?
William,
I remember the "Whirlpool" hole!
Walked all the way in there one day in 1994, and realized I left my fishing vest, license, and tag at home . I borrowed my friend's gear, and sure enough, fish on! It was promptly tagged on my friend's tag. I know, I know, before I'm razzed, but what would you do ? I had a salmon tag and license, but just simply forgot it.
It's the same thing as leaving your wallet at home, driving to the store, only to realize you forgot your license, do you walk home? I think an honest mistake can happen, and that's what I did. All of us have done it a time or two.

Re: Biggest Springer Ever?
My biggest came from the coast also and was right at #30 of clipped fish! My biggest and only springer from the CR was an estimated #25 native. I hope to break that in the very near future!

I can't remember exactly, but my biggest "keeper"was either 27 or 28 lbs. Caught on the Willamette on a spinner.

Re: Biggest Springer Ever?
So, I see where the Columbia will open above I-5 as the Tuesday 3-16. How is that being fished.
Trolling herring or anchored with Alvans like in the fall.
It's very close to home for me up around 205...
Any help would be cool
thanks

Re: Biggest Springer Ever?
Biggest ever for me was probably pushing 35 or 40 and I caught it steelhead fishing in the Columbia. I had an 8-12 Northriver and 12 pound leader. It took a while to land and it broke my heart to let such a huge clipped fish go, but the Columbia didnt reopen until the next day.
