Bonneville count looking better
According to the following link:
Daily Fish Passage Report
The adult chinook count over Bonneville reached a total of 5884 on 4/14. They're coming!
Also a question. With all the rain in the past couple of days and the rain to come, will the water conditions in the lower Columbia still be good for fishing?
Cheers,
Nipper
p.s. that was, of course, a single day total

Re: Bonneville count looking better
I can't agree. The counts are still very low. Last year at this time we were getting five digits a day. But I believe the main thrust of the late run will be moving in late this week due to the moon and the cooler temps. It will take a lot of rain to maket the Columbia unfishable and I don't see that in the forcast anytime soon. So I'm looking for a catch up day of springer fishing Thursday or Friday this week...will post to let everyone know how I did.

Re: Bonneville count looking better
Nip, A hole where we did really well in last year is almost unfishable on the outgoing (as of the recent gate openings at Bonneville) although we're still catching a fish or two. We have however seen more fish caught by the bankies in the area this year than last. Hmmm..... Maybe it's time to give up the 25 foot deep "feel good" spot and search for shallower water.

Re: Bonneville count looking better
Salmonator...I agree with the shallower water...while fishing Saturday we started in 27'
of water but steadily moved shallow...most fish we saw caught were in the 8-12' range...

Re: Bonneville count looking better
Historical counts for April 14th:
1977....4422
1978....3651
1979....1109
1980....1435
1981....1584
1982.....783
1983.....705
1984.....744
1985....2437
1986....2895
1987....2315
1988....3407
1989....3599
1990....3131
1991....1041
1992....2889
1993....3097
1994.....216
1995.....219
1996.....380
1997....4936
1998.....816
1999.....398
2000....3258
2001...15691
Throw out the high years... 1977, 1996, 2001 and then throw out the low years... 1993-1995, 1998. This year's date ( 5884 ) looks very good compared to the rest (a modified "median"). Note that quite often, the highest daily count is on our within 3 days of April 14th. Interesting.

Re: Bonneville count looking better
Nonsense. We have a whole new situation since last year due to extremely favorable ocean conditoins. Those 5 digit days were not a one year fluke. Mark my words, 5 digit days will be back within the next two weeks..!

Re: Bonneville count looking better
*********..Why do you think the cooler temps will matter. The river is colder this year than it has been and much cooler than last year. The fish are coming, the water will warm a bit and maybe the river will settle down a bit, stay at same level for a couple of days. Than hold on!!!

Re: Bonneville count looking better
Ah ha! ....Almost 6,000 fish over Bonneville as of Sunday....NOW the couints are looking better and I'll wager when they post this week's data, we'll be seing five digit days once again.
I'm hitting the Fishery come Thursday..who wants to join me in betting that the good ship Adrianna is limited by noon???

Re: Bonneville count looking better
I'd take that bet if I wasn't such an honest sort. As the previous poster pointed out, there were only 2401 fish yesterday.

*********,
I disagree, it's already posted at 2401 for 04/15/02.

Re: Bonneville count looking better
Yep, the April 15th count is 2401 spring
chinook over Bonneville. Too bad, I was
encouraged by the count of 5884 the day before.
No five digits.
Hopefully it's the high water slowing down the
migration.

Re: Bonneville count looking better
I usually use this site when checking the fish counts. http://www.fpc.org/CurrentDaily/7day-ytd_adults.htm
The way the dams are laid out makes it simpler for me. It doesn't help the counts though.

Re: Bonneville count looking better
1607 isn't too good either for yesterday but without having been up to Bonny lately, something tells me there's a whole bunch of fish milling around up there................

Re: Bonneville count looking better
Could be like the Willamete..where when the water temp hits a certain point...the fish scoot.
The lower movement COULD be a reflection in a temp drop. This co-incided with the observed water temp yesterday while fishing the big river.
If you wanna see what I'm talking about...check the movement #'s at Willamette Falls verses the temp situation..........Look what happens when the water temp nears or hits 51 degrees.

Re: Bonneville count looking better
Let's face it folks. Call it like it is.
The Spring Chinook run was GROSSLY overestimated!
ODFW and WDFG are red faced and maintaining a low profile. It happens. Whether it is high flows, low water temperatures, or just plain lack of fish, this year's run is in trouble. While a total closure is probably not likely, due to the hatchery only limitations of retained fish, we as anglers are just not going to enjoy a good year.
Considering the high flows we are experiencing in both the Columbia and Willamette, even if there were fish in the systems, we would be out of luck, at least for now.
The bright spot? The Clackamas should have plenty of water this year and I'm betting on a better than average run towards the end of April, throughout May, and certainly into June.
My $.02 worth, I'll get off my soapbox now.
Rusty

Re: Bonneville count looking better
Hey, yesterday was the first day this month, where the # of fish going over the dam was larger than last years # for the same date.
