Default World's Biggest Kings (pics posted)

I have a guide friend in Alaska who is writing an article about giant kings.... pretty much have the scoop on the top ten fish to come out of the Kenai. They range from 89.06 to 97.25 pounds.

There is a Skeena fish that weighed 92# that could dethrone one of those Kenai top ten. Anyone out there know of any other sport-caught Skeena or Kalum fish that surpass the 89# mark? Predator Dawg are you out there?

The other place for giant kings is the Rivers Inlet area. Dave Vedder, are you aware of any Rivers Inlet, Chuckwalla, or Kilbella fish that top the 89# mark?

Summer before last there was a king landed on the main Skeena that taped at 99# (length/girth) it was released since salmon were closed at that time.

Actually the worlds biggest kings where "June" hogs on the Columbia. There are thought to have had a "mean" (average) size of 70#!!!! If u do the curve it would put many kings well over the 130# mark... Oh well they and there special "stay in the ocean" for 7+ years are gone...

Commercially the biggest kings are in the 120-140 range!!

There was an Alantic Salmon alson that was taken commercially that exceeded 120+ pounds!

Thought I'd share these old B&W's of some pretty big (and very famous) kings:

World record 126.5# Point Colpoys fish trap Prince of Wales Island, Alaska 1939

World record sport-caught king 97.25# Kenai River Alaska 1985

SlamminKokes

I purchased the photo of the late Les Anderson from the Anchorage Daily News a couple years back.

The photo of the trap fish came out of a book I borrowed from my local library.

I think I remember seeing a 125+ commercial caught salmon picture in STS from the mid 80's It was held up by a guy who was 6'3"+ and it may have been the mount that was on display.
Any help Nick???

All of us who knew Les Anderson were hoping that no one would beat his world record while he was alive and we got our wish. What a gentleman he was. Still the biggest recorded sport-caught king. The Petersburg 126lb king is the largest recorded commercial caught king but the weight was estimated because they gutted it before they weighed it in at 105lbs. A friend of mine owns the mount of the Petersburg’s salmon. There is a lot of speculation regarding larger kings from the Columbia (June hogs) and rumors from Canada's Skeena river area but with no proof, that's all they are, speculation and rumors.
Great pictures.

A number of years back I saw the mount of Les Andersons world record salmon here in Portland at the Sportsmans Show. After I saw that fish it enticed me to go fish the Kenai that summer. The thing that impressed me the most was when you looked from the top down on that fish it had the shoulders of a linebacker. I had never seen a fish that thick.

I tried three times to upload a picture I have of a 135lb chinook. Didn't work. This is a photo postcard which was taken in 1953. Its caption reads "135lb salmon caught in Alaskan Waters" It shows a woman holding the tail of the salmon, which comes to her shoulder and the nose is on the floor. Can sent picture if anyone wants to look.

That photo looks like the mount of the Colpoys Point trap fish. I think someone just got carried away with the caption. Will post a photo of the original mount along with a story when I get home.

Is there any reason that with today's technology we can't raise hatchery salmon in one of these bigger strains??

How great would it be to hook a 70# fish and look down over the edge of your boat and see a clipped fin!!!

OK, here's a pic of the world record skin mount when it was finally delivered to Petersburg by Jonas Brothers Taxidermy.

YUP, same fish alright!

When Jonas Brothers was commissioned to do the mount, they had no idea exactly how BIG it really was. They bid what they thought was a reasonable amount without ever seeing the fish first. When the fish finally arrived, they knew they were losing big $$$ on it. But rather than renege on the deal, they sucked it up and delivered it at the price promised to uphold the comapany name and honor.

When I was a kid living in Garibaldi in the early 70s someone brought in a huge chinook that was said to weigh 92lbs I got to look at it and touch it. The girth and width of that fish was amazing. Is there anyone out there who may recall that fish.

Click this link to see a replica of the 99# Skeena king released in 2001:

UNOFFICIAL WORLD RECORD SKEENA KING

This pig was 53.5 x 38.5 and the 99# was calculated with a divisor of 800. A more realistic divisor of 740 would have put the fish at 107#!

Theres a few things that say "authentic" to me, one is the person holding it adjusts his head to see past the lower jaw of the fish. But what would we do without those who question the authenticiy of fish caught by people they dont know?
Just be thankfull youll never catch a fish that big to be accused of lying about it.

Adjust the brightness of the picture, then look at the belly, theres two pieces of straw similar to that on the ground. ) The lower straw is long, the upper straw is very short. They both pass behind the fish, yet in front of the guys vest, This is almost imposible to accomplish when retouching a photo, and is a dead givaway.

Its no big deal really...

Peace.

Wow, you are observant! I just thought it was a BIG dusky fish when I lifted it from the Kalum River Lodge site. {I can see now where it was faked.} {please disregard}

I can tell you for sure the Kenai fish was real... 90.3# However, the gal is standing quite a ways behind it and pushing the rope/jaw forward to accentuate the size.

What did you guys think of the replica of the giant C&R Skeena king from 2001?

Faked?

Maybe I should have said the straw stuck to the fish, which looks a lot like the straw on the ground assures me the fish is in fact real. Especially since it goes from behind the fish, across the front of the vest, into the outlying area of the photo. Youd have to be pretty darned talented to retouch or "edit" the photo and keep that detail in-tact.

Im spending wayyy too much time in here.

Misinterpreted your first post... I think I understand now about the long piece of straw between the fish and the guy holding it up.

I retract what I said about it being faked.

He has a green jacket tied around his waist that blends in with the bushes. Take a little closer look. I would be very suprised to find out that it wasn't real.

See the lines seperating the lower jaw of the fish from the backgrounds: vest/shoulder/hand/leaves.

That separation cannot possibly be fake. It would be a solid obvious line.

If the fish were an overlay it wouldnt have a piece of straw stuck to it (impossible to replicate) and the seperation of colors would be ridiculously obvious when magnified 5x

Sorry boys, its as real as it gets.

Doug , Dithering photo will remove hard past lines. Resizing or exporting image into another photo edito will as well. I think photo was taken to hide perspective. His waist line looks like pants shoes are in a camp table and he's standing side ways back with his partners rear feet , who is also standing with a wide stance to shrink himself in relationship to fish. I adjusted contrast and looked at 3 negatives. Perception relationship has been fooled with to disguise proportions. He's holding it closer to camera. I vote nice fish but not as big as that photo leads-on it to be.

Please feel free to tell anyone.
Wait till you see the ling cod photo he just gave me tonight! WOW! It

Cheers!

You mean this one?

WOW!

If you look at this pic you can see this guy is just built with short legs that sort of flare from the hips... moreso than the average bear. (Not a diss, just a medical observation). Notice how the "thigh" of his pants sort of balloon out in the ling cod photo. Looks a lot like the king photo... just the king is so damed broad that the confluence of legs to hips is obscured.

I agree with RvW... the king pic is as authentic as they come. It doesn't hurt that the camera's perspective works to the advantage of creating the illusion of a much larger fish when held in front of a short angler! I have one of those hanging in my office. Every patient swears the fish looks like it weighs 90-plus, but it is only 50" x 29" and 58#... doesn't hurt that it is posed in FRONT of my scrawny 5'6" frame (pic to follow). There's a similar thread on the PP board about the authenticity of a pic of a very pretty blonde holding up a Kasilof Hawg. If you see a pic of the fish hanging from the rack BEHIND the girl (also in the thread) you won't think the fish is anything to brag about. Perspective is everything... even without photoshop.

OK, here's that pic (I know... lousy quality scanned from 3 x 5 print, cropped, brightened, but no other photoshop manipulation):

Size is all relative, but this big boy sure looks a whole lot bigger than 58 from this angle. Makes the hawg in my signature look like a guppy, when in fact the rose-blushed C&R king was 3 inches longer, 2.75 inches bigger around, and probably 14-15# heavier.

So the ling did make it on the site...

Your Pic...The fella in the yellow? His entire right side disappears!, and see how your lower body is twisted to one side giving the impression that the photo was dithered, pasted, glued and overtechulated? Its got to be fake, no question about it.

Nice fish no matter how much it weighs.

Nobody's pointed out in the "disputed" photo that it's probably just stuff in the guy's pockets that make his jeans jut out funny at the thigh. Looks legit to me.

You guys are crazy! This photo is 100% real. The guy who caught the fish is one of the top guides on the skeena river. I have fished with him a few times. I was fishing the same day when one of his clients caught the fish. He is just really short which makes the fish look really big. That fish weighed 72 pounds and was caught plunking a spinnin glo from the bank in the Skeena just above the confluence of the kalum river. Him and his clients did okay from the shore, but I must have hooked 100 plus fish in three days just outside his rods backbouncing roe. All he and other anglers did was watch the backbouncing clinic. Although I did not catch a 72 pounder. It's amazing how few anglers on the skenna don't backbounce roe (actually none).

Looks legit to me also, though I think mine looks just as good with the (added 50% to the girth and 10% to the length), making that 28-pound Skokomish King look like an Alaskan monster.

Seriously though, I to those catching those large fish, as it is for most a once in a lifetime experience and that should not be taken away from them!

I know this is an old thread, but I ran into one more giant Skeena king on another board. Not exactly a beauty-contest winner, but boy is it BIG!

Better throw one more in there for good measure to keep all of these MEGA-kings in their rightful place. It's a rare event to see a Kenai king this big AND this bright. I know of only one other comparable fish pic in the big/bright hall of fame... it was caught by pro guide Mike Kelley and his son Mike Jr. I will post it here if I ever get a JPG copy of it.
