Default loop knot on plugs

In the prior Salmon Trout Steelheader it was explained by a guide up in Forks that he uses a loop knot on his plugs to give them more motion in the water. I am wondering if this is simply a large loop that you would pass through the eye and all the way around the plug to form what we used to call a crow's head knot when I was in boy scouts. I am trying to figure out what this guy means when he says "the same kind of loop that fly fishermen use" Anyone have a clue?

As I recall they give an example of the knot in one of the previous STS issues (2 back if I remember correctly.) This year I started using a double overhand "loop knot". Make a loop with the end of the leader and then tie a double overhand knot(go around twice), wet and pull tight. I use 30# mono and it holds great and the fish don't seem to mind either.

I am sure there are others, including the one I am thinking of in the back issue of STS. Any other suggestions....?

Go to: www.marinews.com/fishing/fk_main.htm

and see "Perfect Loop". I believe that's the one he's talking about.

Hey Eric,

Perfection loop is the one. I have been using it on my flatfish that come with the figure 8 connection. These never seem to work with a crosslock snap and need to be tied directly. I believe that this loop helps the plug move more freely, especially when using the smaller sizes. Fly guys have been using it to allow a more natural presentation with less drag from the leader. It ties pretty easily and seems strong enough. John

It could be the Polamar Knot. You pass a loop through the eye of the lure, Make an overhand knot and pass the loop of the overhand over the lure and pull tight. Very easy knot to tie unless you have a big lure your tying on.

The loop knot ties the plug so that the line isn't tight against the eye, it just goes through the eye. Try a king sling. Take the line and hole it with the line coming up off the floor and the plug hanging down so the line is in an upside down U. Then swing the plug around the line 5 times, theb pull the plug back through the hole.

Slick knot to use, and if you can't find it anywhere else go buy a Rapala at Bi-Mart. The paper on the inside of the box has the diagram. They (Normark) call it a "Rapala Knot" (what else?). Does make a trememdous differnce in plug action, but usually only on plugs that have a fixed (screweye) line tie. If you're lazy, just use the snaps like come with hotshots. You can buy those also at Bi-Mart and they accomplish the same thing on larger plugs. Just make sure you get GOOD ones and not the cheapos or they may pull apart and open up.
