Well they didn't show any of the spots on the Wilson I fish so it doesn't bother me that much.

Rob Russell is a good friend of mine also and I think it was a well written article that will hopefully make others aware of how awesome of a river it truely is.

I dunno Ty. You seemed to be pretty regular on the Wilson when you kept posting chromer after chromer just a few months ago.
As long as STS doesn't blow the roof on my Tualatin springer spots, I don't care what they publish.

I see it as no appreciable impact. The very few who have been unconscious for the last several years and decide to start fishing the Wilson will be balanced by the very few who feel that the article exposed their private fish heaven and quit fishing it. Net gain 0.

I really enjoyed it! Hooray for STS!
I read it and thought it was well written. The Wilson is a great river to explore, and to learn about.. and...
The rivers are not mine. Only the memories from fishing and spending time on them are ever mine to keep.

Re: New STS......... Wilson Ifishers Sorry about your luck!
If there's one thing I've learned over the years, it's that the questions 1) Where did you fish, and 2) What did you catch it on, don't really help all that much. Most of the time, it's "you should have been here yesterday" anyway. You still have to spend the time learning how and where to fish the spots.
A week ago today was a perfect example of that. I hooked 4 and landed 3 in one afternoon, while others I talked to, hooked and landed none. What's the difference? Not sure I really know, except, I've been trying to learn 3 different spots, well... After numerious trips to that same river, I'm starting to learn where the fish are, in the particular places I like to fish.
Do you really think the folks who hooked none, will keep coming back? Don't we all keep looking for "greener pastures"? How many secret places are there, anyway?

Re: New STS......... Wilson Ifishers Sorry about your luck!
I dont fish up that far but I do not think that an article is going to hurt it. word of mouth travels much faster then the printing press does.
the river I fish gets quite a bit of press in my area and I doesnt really seem to change the pressure all that much. the only time it really bothers me when I see an article is when its not being honest about the fishing and around here they are usually wrote by guides that are trying to drum up business.
a few years back we had a person incharge of a weekly fishing report telling everyone it was red hot and the fact was that odfw was already stating they were having the worst return they ever had because of a cold water die off of smolts. as you can guess people were crawling out of the woodwork and at best you could plan on one hook up a day that season and you had better not miss it because the chance wasnt going to com along again that day. the guy got relieved of his position when it was brought to the attention of people in charge that he was lying to book clients.
I have read STS for many years and know they would never knowingly publish a false report but I dont think its gonna cause people to swarm on the wilson like locousts (SP?)

I have to agree with ZAQ. Not many people are going to fish a river for any great deal of time without luck and return. except maybe me! (i had a few bad years )

Re: New STS......... Wilson Ifishers Sorry about your luck!
With so many great rivers to fish in Oregon and Washington you would think most people would stick to the rivers nearest their homes. The only reason I would travel out of my way to fish another river is if I happened to be in the area, or if I was invited by someone else. I know my chances of catching fish are much better if I'm fishing water I know rather than water I don't know. So in other words, you wont see me fishing the Wilson because of that article.

STS has some great articles on techniques...some that I have applied to the rivers that I fish...not the other way around.

Re: New STS......... Wilson Ifishers Sorry about your luck!
I fish the wilson about 3 times a week and really haven't noticed much change in pressure since the STS article came out. i did enjoy the map and think it's a good addition to the magazine. The article talked about different techniques and a few vagueries on locations but like I said all of the articles in STS or OR Hunting & Fishing try to stay vague on locations...not complaining since I really don't want 50 people in my favorite hole on the weekends. Has anyone noticed that the articles on the wilson are always the same? "hot bite from the guide shop down to sollie smith," "best methods are bobber and pink jig, or drift fishing with a pink or pearl corky tipped with a sandshrimp and/or eggs," or "spinners and spoons have proven effective." it's the same old thing every time. I agree with Zaq though about the majority of people that don't catch something in their first couple trips to the river: they find some other river to fish.

Re: New STS......... Wilson Ifishers Sorry about your luck!
The river has seemed busy at times this year...but I still have come into a drift right after someone and "picked his pocket" with several nice fish so far.
I think that crowds don't always equate to more fish caught....most guys in the crowded spots are rookies who are lucky to get any fish at all.

Re: New STS......... Wilson Ifishers Sorry about your luck!
I'm more with Ty on this one.
After a magazine and newspaper report on the stream I like to fish, the river was swarming with boats and bank fisherman the following weekend, and I spotted several out of state plates. Had someone in the morning stop me and ask me a bunch of questions about where to put in, where the trouble spots were in the river.. etc... etc... He said he had seen the article in a magazine and was from Woodland Washington. Thought he'd come down to see what all the fuss was about.
The Wilson is so busy anyway I'm not sure you would notice if it was busier. When they report on other rivers I've seen a noticable difference in out of town traffic.
The fact is none of these rivers are secrets and they are fairly busy in their own right, but the magazines, internet reports and seminars do tend to crowd the river being referenced. At least temporarily.

When the Sollie ramp has 18 rigs in the lot and they are still shuttling them down on a Tuesday, the river is already busy. I don't think the article is going to impact it that much.

Re: New STS......... Wilson Ifishers Sorry about your luck!
GET REAL TY
I hope you were joking about a mag. placing more pressure on a river such as the WILSON..
You post more pictures on here than anyone else on a weekly basis, Nice Work, but don't begruge someone reading mags., websites, hiring a guide or just talking to someone. We all had to learn somehow and someway, I would assume you weren't born with some Godly gift to fish, you worked at the skills you aquired you talked, read and reserched every nook and cranny. In closing don't worry about pressure, if you are as good as you say you are you should be able to pick a fish out of any where.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">Newspaper reports have much more of an impact than a magazine will ever have. Newspapers are local and give in depth reports on local watersheds. I've noticed huge influxes in crowds when the newspaper reports that the fishing at a local river is excellent.

No problem with the article...
This is my go to MetalHead River and I don't see any issue whatsoever...
You still have to cast & set the hook so what is the big deal
I love it when more people catch fish...No matter what river they go to...
People catching fish make for happy people

Right on Mark!!!! You get it!!!
I'd still fish with ya Ty, but you post too many pictures. I'd only fish in your secret spots. Not expecting many to understand why I say this...
I understood what you meant in your post but not sure I'd worry about the main rivers in the state that get a lot of publicity anyway. I'm free with info on the publicized rivers. But I, like many, share nothing about many rivers.

I do not reveil the places I fish.... People think they know where I fish..
I have been fishing ten different rivers...and they think it is always the NF Alsea.
Pretty funny how people are.......
And I have fished the Wilson one day in my life in 1996 w/ Dave Johnson?

Re: New STS......... Wilson Ifishers Sorry about your luck!
the main rivers in the state get hammered so I really dont se an article making much of a problem.
the places I worry about are the little creeks or rivers that ardly anyone fishes someone spilling the beans on them could make a huge impact on them.
last fall trollin was pretty slow so I told my buddy hey why dont we go up this little tide water river and mess around see whats up there
as you can guess we had 4 fish in the boat in about 200 yrds of river. I felt kind of bad about it because the river was so small and it was like shooting ducks in a barrel so I said hey dont mention this to anyone because its so small it couldnt handle the pressure. it got mentioned and the next weekend another person I know was up there with a boat load of guys catchin the heck out of them. I kind of wished I had never went up there and fished these small rivers cant handel the excess fishermen.
large rivers are going to get lots of pressure no matter if there is a magazine article about them or not so I dont tend to worry about them.
I got a laugh at the guy saying thay sollies had 18 rigs and they were shuttelin already. I wonder if he ever fished the elk or sixes? I been at the elk launch 30 minutes before daylight and seen 50 rigs in the lot, 25 ahead of me waiting to put in and cars stackin up behind me by the minute lol
there is more angelers then rivers in this state and now since they cut out hatchery plants on a lot of them it just pools the fishermen on the rivers that have hatchery fish its sad but thats the way it is

Re: New STS......... Wilson Ifishers Sorry about your luck!
There may be no "secret" river...but there are spots on those rivers that people don't normally fish. I've seen absolutely SPECTACULAR spots..where we've had "triples" on salmon go from having absolutely nobody being around to the proverbial "Cluster****" in a matter of one year.
If you're willing to put your knowledge to work, and break away from what's read in magazines, and on the internet...you can sometimes find those "Gold Mines"
That's what really seperates the 10% fisherman from the "point and click" 90%fisherman. , put your knowledge to work, and do your homework.
When you think about it... fish go from point "A" to point "B". Anywhere in-between can be a "Gold Mine" if you're willing to take the time to look for it.
Trust me.

Re: New STS......... Wilson Ifishers Sorry about your luck!
Having a secret spot is way cool but getting upset about posts and articals that novice fishermen and women use to learn the joy of fishing are also not cool. Some of us havent been blessed with living here for 50 years and just want a chance to catch some fish.I think sharing info is a good thing. Just think the next bankie that gets steered the wrong way could be the guy signing the bills that prevent us all from fishing.I started fishing here a while ago and had no luck, got upset and sold everything then in 1999 I was taken under wing by two river rats and have had a passion for fishing ever since. Didnt mean to go off on a rant SORRY

Re: New STS......... Wilson Ifishers Sorry about your luck!
There is no secret river in this state to any fisherperson that is serious.
Most folks that don't live for our sport will give up on spots like that, and those of us that do will dedicate time and respectful advice to those in need of help, without divulging "too" much where abouts.
If one has the desire, they will learn on their own in time.
I support STS, besides this has been published info by F&H news several times in the past.
