Default Teaching children to fish

Thought this a good article on teaching children to fish.
I have the video that Stan did, and it's really great.
You can order that off of the front page of ifish, still.
Click here to read his latest, on Closed face Spinning Reels.

Tks Jennie, I bought some rods for my kids a little while ago (one spinning for the 9yr old, and a closed face for the 6yr old). But the closed face just ain't cuttin the mustard...need a new one...now I know what to get.

Take the kids to Willamina pond. They stock some large hatchery fish and also recycle Steelhead in there. My brother and I take his kids (3 and 6 yrs.) there all the time. One of the kids hooked a 8 lb. Steelhead while there. Should of saw the look on their eye's when that Steelie jumped. They quite fishing for the day though. They had their big fish to play with and argue over.

I agree with the close-faced spinning reel for kids (or anyone learning to use a spinning reel).

I bought my daughter (age 7) an "under-spin" closed-faced reel last year. It's great. It's a cross between a spin-cast (covered) and a spinning reel.

Instead of letting up on the trigger with your thumb (spin-cast), you let go of a lever with your forefinger (just like letting go of your line with forefinger on a spinning reel).

It teaches the timing of when to let go of your line.

Vinny - My dad taught us to use Mitchell 300s right off the bat. He thought that if we could figure out when to let go of the button we could figure out when to let go of the line. He was right. That was in the late '50s and kids haven't changed that much!

The Steelheaders Free fishing fair this weekend in Hillsboro (Centuray High school 10-4) is good clinic too. See our posting on this board - lots of how too stuff, about 30 seasoned fishing volunteers ready to assist + some good gear giveaways. You cant go wrong - and the price is right.
