Default Digitizing Photos....

Sadly I am without, and shall remain so, a digital camera. So for those of us without one, anyone know the process for getting standard film converted to digital via CD or otherwise? Can it be done from the negatives of a previously developed roll? Can you scan them at Kinko's and get them on disk?

Any other suggestions?

Lured....most of the Rite-Aids around have the
digital machine in their film section...you can scan it in and drop it to a disk....or, you can spend less than $100 on a flatbed scanner and hook it to your computer. I bought a simple Umax
flatbed for about $70 a year ago and it comes with photo software. There's all kinds...plain scanner, fax/copier/scanner/printer all in one combos etc...

Lured In,
I believe you can have any photos sent in for processing sent back on disc. We don't own a digital camera either so we have our photos developed into regular pictures and scan them on our scanner. Nice thing about this is you can use a photo program such as photoshop and manipulate your photos to your liking, kind of fun also. Digital cameras are nice but I would say a scanner is the next best thing. The othernice thing about the scanner we have is that you can use it as a copier and fax machine and it only cost us $40 after rebate.

Cannon offers a couple Film scanners. These scan negatives not pictures and the resolution is better. However, they will cost more that a really good digital camera. The only option to not doing it yourself (scanning negs or pictures) is to send them in. This has been noted allready so I won't repeat the details. I can get more details if anyone wants to know on the scanners.

York offers Picture CD, haven't tried them yet though. Used to get regular pictures developed by them years ago...great job if you don't mind waiting for them to get developed.

Wherever you go, get the Picture CD, not the floppy disk...the CD will give you higer resolution photos than the floppy will, and will hold about 3-4 rolls of film on each CD. Also be prepared to do some minor touchups (hair, dirt, etc) that happen during the scaning process.

I heard a that if you have the new Kodak Advantix cameras there is some kind of unit available to plug into a computer that you can put your film roll into and get the pictures off of the film yourself. Anybody know about this???

wannafish,

I saw one about 1.5 years ago when the film first came out. I fellow at work had one. He was pretty bummed at how slow it was, but other than that things looked pretty good. The film has to be processed first before you can scan it, so you still end up dropping cash and waiting on the end of the fishing trip.

Looks like it's been discontinued now, you might be able to find one for cheap on ebay or something....
