What would you do???
Caught a springer saturday that had about 1/4 of its adipose fin still intact. Would you call this a clipped fish or a native???

I talked to a fish checker at the lewis river because some winter steelhead were'nt clipped all the way and he said if it has 2/3 of it's fin it needs to go back.

Re: What would you do???
look at the other fins. are they nibbled on? in the hatcherys the smolts attack each other and screw up the fins a little. I remember the old way of telling if a stealhead was a hatchery fish... was if the dorsal fin was bitten down.
If i catch a salmon with marks like that...well

Re: What would you do???
Eat it!
I called the ODFW a few years ago with the same question, the answer I got was if it has been visably clipped it's OK to keep. She also said that the hatcheries sometimes clip them a little late... ??? don't know if they were in a hurry or what ??? she said that sometimes they don't get clipped correctly and that they kind of regenerate.
But they will deffently looked clipped, she said.
Eat it, and enjoy it!

Re: What would you do???
If it made it to Idaho, the law is that it has to be completely clipped and healed. When they get them to the trap, they are recorded as a "bad ad" they are tagged and sent back down river. If they get caught then the tag lets the catcher know it is a hatchery fish and is legal to keep. When clipping 1mill+ fish there are many that are only part clipped or not clipped

Sounds like a "keeper", but if in doubt I would release it.

Re: What would you do???
In Washington, I believe the rules say that a wild fish is one with a "fully formed adipose fin", in which case I'd be BBQ'g tonight if I were you...
Fish on...

Re: What would you do???
I had this happen to me last year and we were getting ready to release it. It was clearly "mis-clipped" , but we were going to play it on the safe side. As we were reviving it, some other boats were yelling to konk it. After deliberating the situation we decided to keep it. Hind sight being 20/20, I think I probably would have let it go rather than face a potential fine.
As always, when in doubt put it back.

Re: What would you do???
in oregon, it's called lemon herb and pepper. hehehehe. 1/4 of stump is nothing like a real native with 3" fin double the size of 50cent piece.
