Default Sandy report 02/09 and a Shimano reel question

Hit Ceder creek at first light today. I was the first one on the ceder creek side. Hooked and released one Native, and had another fish come unbuttoned. Was debating on wether I should cross the river and fish, that is until a few people showed up and tried to cross. Saw 3 people go for a swim while crossing, one person went down the rapids. they got out OK. I figured I would stay right where I was after witnessing the swimmers. Saw about 3 other fish cuaght, and left around 10am after beeing crowded out. Now for my question about the reel, I had about 50 backlashes on my Calcutta . Not sure what the problem could be. I just re spooled fresh line on it last night, and oiled it about three trips ago. The reel is going on 2 years old, Could it need service? Would this solve the problem?

Thanks
CM

Adjust the center spool friction on your reel.

Tighten it down most all the way. Pick a weight size you are going to cast. Attach it to your line. Lift the rod tip as high as you can. Click the release. Back off of the center round knob until the weight slowly drops to the deck/ground.

Back off until it falls freely, but the line stops immediately with no overspool when the weight hits the ground.

Re-adjust as required. This will take care of most of it, in addition to your thumb pressure as needed.

The Calcutta's have counter-weights that you activate/deactivate by opening the reel by losening those two silver screws (with the slit for a dime).

You just snap opposing weights out or in to fine tune it. It comes with only two or none in the engaged (out) mode. I think I went to 4 out of six engaged and have had no problems.

As mentioned above you can adjust your freeline drag as well, but if you back it off too far you will lose the piece...

Go to fishermans and they will show you how to dial it in!! Good luck.

I guess I forgot to mention that I'm quite familier with baitcasters and the Calcutta. I've done all that is described above. This is a problem that has just started. I'm not sure whats going on. Thanks for trying to help though. I think I may need to take it in to Olie's.

Did you switch line types when you respooled? Also, bear in mind that new line will be stiffer than old line. It's just something you'll have to adjust to until the line relaxes.

Sometimes excess oil from the spool bearing migrates to the "hub" that the centrifugal brakes rub on. You might try cleaning the inside of the hub with a dry Q-tip.

CM,

Sorry about that. I was trying to say that I had already posted on another thread and I was repeating myself. Nothing intended toward you at all. .
