Where does one collect scap lead? I started picking up tire weights whenever I was walkng on a busy street, but after a month I only had a few ounces.

Word is the pipes in my house have a bunch of lead in 'em too.... <grin>

Default alternative (to store-bought) weights

Howdy,

Wondering if you ol' bankers or jetty nuts had any tricks for making weights? I don't mind tossing lures to the water gods, I figure they can make a nice necklace out of em. But buying an 8 ounce chunk of lead, just to leave it wrapped on a rock seems silly.

Last night I drilled out a few railroad spikes and epoxied eye bolts into the hole. They were solid this morning and only cost the eyebolt and the epoxy. Are there better low-cost weights for my next trip to Prescott?

Used spark plugs work pretty good for jetty fishing. I'm just going to trash can them anyway.

Railroad spikes used to be a favorite of mine back in the bank maggot day. You just pick up a few while marching down the tracks to the sturge hole.

Now days we collect scrap lead and make our own. This just happened at the sinker party last weekend.....

 I have 1/2 of a five gallon bucket of 1 lb. chuncks. This is pure lead no tin or ? This is more than I need and will trade some 1 lb'ers for some 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6+ oz round weights or borrow your mold and make weights in trade. I also have a 10 lb. down rigger mold with fin, if you want to trade molds for awhile. I'm in Troutdale Or. E-mail for more info. bobc@foxinternet.net

Scrap lead is hard to come by these days since it's been classified as a hazardous waste item, unless you know someone who works at a garage or tire place.
Alternatives to lead weights that I've tried for jetty & surf fishing that were cheap & successful include: Large bolts tied with a mono leader of their own, or epoxy a wire eye to a rock.

The scrap metal yard in kelso has lead for sale I bought most of the soft lead but they had buckets of tire weights for .25 a pound they may even have more soft lead it's been two months since I was there last the soft is .30 pound.

I got about 600 pounds from work so that should last me awhile.

I make 6,8,10 oz teardrops for plunking and 1/5oz -1 3/4oz teardrops for drifting I was think about taking some up to bonneville and selling to the plunkers (you loose alot of weight up there!)
