CATHLAMET springers
Left dock at 6 am. ,,fished below Pillar Rock,,
14 miles down-river,,2 of us,,3 keepers,,
lost 3,, had 3 other take-downs,,no wildies,,
most action was at low water,,,
YA-HOO,,taking a break until Tuesday,,
let the poor working guy have his chance,,LOL,,,
can't figure out the take-downs & no fish,,
they just stop rod from working,,then a couple
fo mild jerks, then gone,,same with the fish we had on & lost,,
but the 3 we landed were just there, with the pole buried in pole holder,,we used sardine,
wraped kwick-fish,,with replaced hooks,,
any-one else having this problem ?????
Later DONALD,,
had steaks-of-NUKIE 4 dinner last night,,
best in the west,,YUMMY,,lol,, burp,,

Re: CATHLAMET springers
Trying to figure out the takedown = no fish thing also.
Had two strikes & five fish on & all got off.
That is a first for me. I need to change something. I've lost my mojo.
I think my 30 pound power pro didn't stretch causing a sudden jerk. I even lost one kwick fish off 25 pound mono leader.
Who knows?
Tom

Re: CATHLAMET springers
Ah, yes the mystery of the Kwikfish takedown. Welcome aboard. Springers must be very clever dudes. Or are these line-rubs??? Who knows. But don't feel alone.

Re: CATHLAMET springers
I’m not an expert by any means but do you loosen your drag? I set my drag fairly loose and let them take it. It’s tough to watch that rod pump but I don’t pick it up until it’s peeling line. Don’t be afraid of using heavy leader. I typically use 30lb and sometimes 40lb. I like Maxima for its stretch and it makes for a good shock absorber for the 65lb power pro mainline I use. Some of the things I’ve read, 60 – 80 lb leader is not out of the question with kwikfish. STS had an article maybe 6 months ago and it talked about using some mondo leader.

Re: CATHLAMET springers
We get those kind of Takedowns and no hook-up things with Summer Steelhead on the Columbia. We call them "Drive Bye's"!!!

Re: CATHLAMET springers
The wild I got into yesterday was headed back to sea. I couldn't really see through Ray to watch my pole and only the buzzing drag clued me that I was bit. When I did see it the fish had it buried and the rod was bucking. Every bite I've seen so far has been a bury and burn the reel.
I think drag setting is the key. For saltwater salmonoids I put the click on and I set the drag just heavy enough to keep the line on the reel while trolling. That's how I set it yesterday.
My kwikfish was modified. Owner treble in front about the size of the original and a smaller Gammy treble on a pair of split rings and a barrel swivel in the back. Giz hated my 5 bead chain in the back so I changed it. Right after that I got bit, thanks Giz. The other thing we played with is a small square of the 'hook' side of velcro. Just stick it to the bottom of your plug in front of the front hook eye. Then grind in some sardine filet and go. It seems to last 20 minutes or more.
There is no substitute for sharp hooks!
This array of weapons had the fishes mouth sewn shut so the fight was only good for a minute and then she came right to the boat.
Oh, the line is 30 ande clear with 40 mono leader. Bait Boy and the guys were talking about 50 or even 60 mono leader on a kwikfish. As the FNG I listened politely and thought they were yanking me. Then the dog started yarking up socks and I don't remember much after that. I was traumatized.....

Re: CATHLAMET springers
Fished Cathlamet at the second Island caught 1 native, saw 3-4 caugth. The good bite was at the tip of Puget Island during the tide runoff. Saw some fish at the ramp, was no red hot but not bad either.

Re: CATHLAMET springers
Take downs and gone- While sturgeon fishing with smelt lately we have been getting lots of bites and no fish. Bring up the smelt and the belly is gone. ********* ! Wonder if they are also hitting the sardine wrap.

Re: CATHLAMET springers
Just curious here. Did the fish that you hooked up on strike in the same way your take downs did?? maybe they were steelhead???

Re: CATHLAMET springers
Catch and Eat gets that from me (wait, wait, wait....). So far this week my boat has had 22 take downs. Three of those were just quick grabs that let go. We hooked the other 19 and only lost two of them! The two that were lost were because (1) the angler didn't thumb the spool when he set it so all he got was a couple head shakes and the fish was gone and the second fish was lost becasue some how it got the hook off the split ring. Every other fish has been hooked solid and landed because the anglers listened to my instructions. Let them take it.
And as far as loosing one becuase of leader breakage, that wont happen if you use heavy leader enouph leader (50#)

Re: CATHLAMET springers
Friday we fished around Longview. We ended up with 4 in the boat. I hooked 3. Each bite was light. The rod popped a couple of times - I lifted it out of the holder and waited for a solid pull then set the hook. I modified my K15 kwikfish by adding a owner treble on a double split ring to the tail and a single siwash with a barrel swivel to the middle. 30# tufline 30# maxima leader and have never broke off a fish.

Re: CATHLAMET springers
How many have you hooked on that leade? I only ask because years ago I used to use light leader too but loosing one fish, oven worse, one good fish catching Kwikfish is one two many.
If the fish aren't leader shy why take chances?
