Default Sorry neighbors!

Pulled my boat out and parked it on the street yesterday about 3:30 pm. Every year I do
a serious spring cleaning of my boat, fixing all the things I broke the in the last year :depressed:
My road is sloped and I parked the boat with the stern on the downward side of the slope.
I spent 4 hrs cleaning the thing and finished around 7:30pm. Went to work the next day
and came home to discover the Fire Department came to visit my boat that afternoon.
Apparently the neighbors noticed that gasoline was spewing out of the fill cap on my boat.
I cant count how many days of the year I park my boat like this and never a problem.
The only thing I can figure is that with the warm temperature we had yesterday the fuel
expanded and the pressure caused the fuel to be released. Now my paint is damaged around
the fuel cap and the gas dissolved the asphalt on the street. Has anyone else experienced this?

On warms days my boat will do this also if parked just right.

My fuel vent is up front, fill hole in the back of the boat, and it the nose of the boat is parked low for some reason the fuel will get pushed out the vent and drip on the ground as it expands on hot days. When I crack the fill cap the tank will burp and the dripping will quit.

One more reason to not paint a boat.

This used to happen to me when the weather got real hot. I solved the problem by keeping the tank approx 1 gal down from full. I have a good idea how much fuel i burn a day so when i fill up i tell them to put in x amount of gas. Problem solved. Tundra, you might try and use some very fine grit rubbing compound around the cap. Don't know how deep the damage is but if its just surface damage then it should take it off and make it look better.

You are fortunate that did not happen to you in California. The fire department would send you a bill. Fish and Game also responds to spills like this to see if fuel got into the drains, then the rivers. DFG then would send you a ticket!

This happened to me on a hot day last summer. I had filled the boat and went out on the lake. After trolling most of the day I did not even think the gas would still be high. However after parking the boat with the jack all the way up (to help drain any water after washing) and a very hot day it started to dip out of the vent. The funny thing is that it was a good two weeks before the weather got warm enough for this to happen. I don't know how much fuel expands by tempature but it can really cause problems if you aren't careful. I keep a hose with an outboard bulb pump handy to drain down the tank if needed. Start a siphon and drain a couple of gallons off the tank. Or just go for a speed test of the boat before leaving the water.
