Default Smelt for Springers. Anyone tried it???

From reading current reports for this year and some from the past, seems that some Springers are full of smelt. So any one tried cut plug, or behind the flasher...... Would you toughen them up in rock salt and add bueing??? If I get my hands on some fresh smelt I will definately gonna try it.

I hav'nt tried them for springers but we slamed the nooks and silvers last summer on them in the big pond, dont know why they would'nt work for springers...seems like I saw a post where somebody checked the guts of one and found smelt in them.Throw the kitchen sink at them if I think it will help.

Smelt are about the same sieze as herring so it seems like they would work. Probably salt and blueing would help. When they are trolled they probably would fool the Salmon in thinking they were herring. Haven't tried it but it seems like it should work.

Safetychain mentioned a pound down and teeth marks last weekend while sturgeon fishing. Proabably a springer.

I would imagine if they hit smelt while you are reeling in or dropping your rig sturgeon fishing they would work.

Met a guy that filets them like a sardine, and lets them air dry overnight in the garage so they stay together, and wraps his Quickfish with them.

Dennis,

I've been wondering the same thing. Nice oily fish, you'd think it'd work great. I like this..."think outside the box"...

I think I'll give 'em a try with a RSK. If springers are eating them, I don't see why not.

I was sturgeon fishing up at the fishery last fall and was reeling in my bait when I caught a fish halfway to the boat. Thought it was a shaker until it jump out of the water and I saw it was about a 15-20# chrome salmon. Told my buddy to get the net and I was trying to loosen the drag and then the hook came out. I Was using herring that time rigged backwards, but could of easily been smelt. Must of had a roll to it.
