You might want to check all your fittings for air leaks while the motor is drawing fuel. It could be you are jsut losing the prime on it.

I had the same problem with a hose running to my honda kicker, so now I keep an extra fitting in the boat.

What year is the motor? To change the fuel pump on a '76-'84 (the years that I have) is
extremely easy. First unscrew the center screw to remove the inlet hose and strainer. Next
disconnect the fuel line that goes to the carburetor. Now take the two screws that hold the
pump to the block and remove the pump. Reassemble in reverse order. After you finish go have a beer!

Two things I've learned the hard way.

Never underestimate the VENT or the FUEL LINE CONNECTIONS. Both seem like a bad fuel pump.

A clogged vent and your kicker will die like it is out of fuel. A leaky connection and it sucks air.

On Johnsons, the fuel connections have those o-rings in them. They cost pennies so I change them every spring.

Since I'm on lessons learned.... If it is electrical.... check the GROUND!!!
