Wireless internet access from the bank?!
First off I apologize for being a nerd, but...
Does anyone know of a bank fishing (or boat fishing)location where one can get a wireless internet signal? It would be soooo much easier to heal from this "Springer Disease" if I could keep the clients under the impression I'm at my desk.
And if not, does anyone live near a decent fishing beach who'd be willing to host a 802.11 antenna? (prescott, SS, etc) I'm guessing we could get enough of the nerds who ghost this BBS together to put in a DSL line and base station.

Re: Wireless internet access from the bank?!
I know w/ sprint pcs, a wireless card, and a laptop, wireless is pretty easy, and with the right plan not too expensive... works anywhere your cell does.
many of the new phones are coming pre installed w/ 3g software... now they just need to activate the towers, and the connections will be realy fast.

Tinned Fish-
Hey, us nerd-geek-fisherfolk gotta stick together!
Get a short length of PVC pipe and a Pringles potato chip can ....
Details of the areas where wireless access is available in the Portland area (and elsewhere) can be found in the latest issue of CPU (Computer Power User).
I really admire your devious nature, TF ... to appear that you're at your desk while fishing by using a wireless hookup is inspiring. <me/ wipes tear of admiration from eye>

Of all things, Tillamook has been chosen as a place to test this wireless service!
I just spoke with the local ATT phone rep! Tillamook? COOL!

Re: Wireless internet access from the bank?!
I'll scope the CPU. I saw those pringles can antennas on the web! Beauty stuff. With all the line-of-sight on the columbia, it sure seems like we could hook up decent base station and be able to slip out for long afternoons. I mean heck, the bosses do it all the time and just come back with headaches and blurry eyes! I'd rather dissapear and come back with a loaded smoker.
Mmmm, Wireless Tillamook... When it's up an rollin', I'll sell the house and head that way. Wireless salmon, wireless crab, wireless sturgeon, wireless jetty fish. Yeah, that's the perfect blend of nerd and nature!
Hey, any of you tech company start-up types -> here's one extremely motivated person willing to work for a very reasonable wage in Tillamook! And I can bring along an experienced Dev/QA team if you'll let us out of the office at high slack!

Re: Wireless internet access from the bank?!
You'd better make sure you still have hatcheries pumping out all those fish before you take off to Tillamook. Otherwise it's gonna be pretty bleak down there. You'll have the Ghost Hole biffy all to yourself.

Tinned Fish-
Don't forget the sunscreen ... a nice tan from a day at the 'desk' is likely to give you away.

Thumper,
Even with an empty hole and no company, I'd still be doing more fishing than I'm doing now. They call me Tinned Fish becuase that's the only kind of fish I can catch! <grin>
Roger the hatcheries. I've been writing my letters...

Re: Wireless internet access from the bank?!
I don't think 802.11 will be on the river any time soon, but using a notebook with a cell card is a reasonable approach, however, BW will be in the 20Kbps arena. Works fine when you are jumping cell sites continuously, but also a bit pricey for subscription.
I am wireless 802.11, on my property but range is only about 100M.
...and the geeks will inherit the earth!

this is one solution either for handhelds (IPAQ) or a notebook. The price is high though and this won't change in the near future.

Re: Wireless internet access from the bank?!
I own a small house about 200 yards from the Barview jetty. I am planning to play around with a satellite internet connection since I do not have DSL or wired phone access. When I get this to work reliably, I will put up an 802.11 b system for those that want to "work remotely". If anyone has experience with satellite based internet access, I would appreciate any advice based on experience. I do not know anyone that has used satellite based internet connectivity.

Re: Wireless internet access from the bank?!
I looked into and it has some limitations. You can run vpn because you can't use/reserve sockets. The satellite BW is extremely tight, so they don't let you have the total BW available. Also download speeds are about 400K and upload is 56K, not balanced like cable or DSL.
I also don't think you can run simulataneous sessions, but somebody else could comment on that?

Tinned Fish,
You're my hero man! Just knowing that other fishers are out there with the same unique character flaws as myself, well, darn it, it just makes me proud! Catching fish while on the clock is tough too beat. Fishon Baby
