What do you use to kill fish with? A real store bought-bonker? Hammer? Sawed off baseball bat?Rock? We use a wrench to whack 'em. Also tightens propane fittings too. Hammer on sturgies. Just too tough for wood products. A knife works well too. Don't use a leatherman knife though. Sometimes the blade folds back at just the wrong time and slices the wrong one! OUCH! Probably don't matter just as long as you open their eyes. This, of course, only applies to legal fish. No matter where you live.
So the next time ya want one for the barbie what do ya say??? We say "Gimme the wrench!" Or
"Wrench 'em!" Or "Whack 'em on the head!"
Have Fun.

i usually get a nice piece of drift wood that I find along my many fishing trips.. somethng that catches my eye. take it home clean it up add lead if it needs it. my last chunk of wood came from alaska and has a gaff screwed into it. made it and took it out and landed a 50 pound white king, won a local derby and made like $300....hmm my dad has it ..i better go get it.

Maglite - 4 cell works nice. Another good one is the large hardwood hammer handle that I picked up at a hardware store. Wrapped the neck with cord and made a loop to go around my wrist or to hang the handle. Works great and cost very little.

Back when cell phones were the size of bricks I almost got to use my buddy's but he caught me before I could administer the coup de grace (I was hoping to kill two "birds" with one whack!)

A 9" piece of 6-4 Ti bar stock machined to include a handle necked down to a nice solid thumper on the end. Couldn't imagine the number of fish dispatched over the last 5 years with it.

If I knock my own salmon off with the net in the middle of the ocean and no one saw it, did it actually happen?

I machined a really nice piece of aluminum into a fish whacker. Wish I'd had access to titanium then, that would make a nice one.

Usually I don't bonk them at all, I cut the gills and bleed them out. My fishin buddy always bonks his before cutting their gills but they never do bleed as much as mine do.

Forgot one thing!!

TAKE THAT PETA!!!!!

Doesn't anybody cut under the jaw to let them bleed out first. They taste much better that way! You get a whiter meat.

I like to scour garage sales for the little kids baseball bats. Found out the plastic ones dont do to well, but those wood ones make good wackers.
They are also good for getting rid of your bait at the end of the day . I dont cut the throats because I dont like blood all over my boat. Plus, I have not seen how its done. Any body care to explain how, exactly, do you go about cutting throats in the boat, and keeping the mess to a minimum? Thanks

being a bankie, i try to keep the amount of stuff i pack with me to a minimum. i usually bonk mine with a rock or a stick. whatever is close at hand. i usually open the mouth and cut through the gills, top and bottom just for good measure. i tried the under the chin cut one and it didn't bleed out very well at all. bloodiest filet job i've ever had to do.
