I think we might have an ocean view during dinner. I talked to my mom tonight and she drove up to Barview today to let the grandkids play on the sand hill and she said the beach line has drastically moved. When you get to the coast guard tower their use to be a road that went to the right and it followed the beach line. The road has been recently washed away and their are logs and debri in the parking lot where we ate last year. We can still get out on the jetty, but the beach to the north has moved what sounded like 100 +/- yards inland.

BOE what happened to the overflow camp sites that are in that area? Gone I am thinking. Thumper had the great idea of pulling his motor home into one of those spots. So that might not be possible this year?

I dont know, there are a lot of sites in that campground. I think there are like 400 sites or something unreal like that. I just know the road is gone that turns to the right just past where we ate last year. There has to be lots of places to park, it just sounds like the ocean is telling us who is in control of shaping the beach. It happens all the time. A couple years ago the ocean breached the North jetty right out from the parking lot. It has been fixed, but there were some big boulders missing.

I've heard several people and Roy say they are taking crap pots and their boats. Surely there will be places to toss them out. It could be a problem finding them later as the water runs in and out of the jaws pretty fast and it may not be the best place for them. Sounds like this will be a fun event even if the weather doesn't comply with our wishes. Several have experience at this jetty fishing and I can hardly wait to learn from them. It will be a great filler between winter fish and the springers, that I need to learn more about too. See ya there.

I was thinking about taking the boat and the crab pots down. With all the rain they have had and the current forecast is for rain thru Thursday, I am thinking that crabbing may be pretty slow. Anyone else have any thoughts on this? Will it be worthwhile? I would love to contribute a couple of dozen crabs to the BBQ. I guess I will make a decision later in the week. If I drag the boat down, the wife and I will have room for one or two bodies. I only have three traps, so if you have traps or rings and are interested, let me know.
I need to pick up some tackle for the jetty fishing. I would think that between Marie @ Tillamook bait and possibly some of the other locations down there, they should be able to fix me up. I guess I am looking for 1/4 & 1/2 jig heads with 1/0 hooks. 3" curly tail grubs in white, chartruse, and glow. Does that sound right?

Glad you are gonna be there. I dont think we will need any more BBQ's. We will have the big one that was at Jens BBQ last year and I made another one yesterday that is 2 ft by 4 ft. We were a little short on oyster cooking space last year and between the two of them, I think we will have 16 sf of cooking surface. There should be picnic tables onsite that we can use for table space, unless you wanna bring a table.

Let me know what time you are headed down. I have one trap that has yet to be dunked and would like to give it a run.
My lady and I will be there probably around ten or so but that can change.
BTW, if you need some jigs and tails, I should have enough to spare, gonna bring the walleye tackle box and see if I can decorate the jetty rocks.

In regarding crabbing in Tillamook Bay...
I spent the weekend at Rockaway.
We only put out the three pots in Tillamook Bay (by the west channel) got 14 nice crabs.
I too was thinking that all the bad weather might slow down the crabbing, but there was several boats out there and were getting a few here and there.
If you have pots, bring them-if you don't use them fine. But you might as well have the 3 pot per person limit out in the water if possible.

AND ALSO,
If you're going to bring crab pots,
make sure you have a bait box in it.
Otherwise you'll be out of bait in 30 minutes.
Might want to also bring all the leftover shad you have too.
It works really good!

As mentioned above quite a few are going to bring boats and crab gear, I will and 'Puffin' too. If the weather and tide allows crabbing should go on all day Saturday.
Then .... we cook and share what we caught? There's a lot of bay .. maybe we could get boaters to haul gear to and from the spot for others. I usually fish 6 pots or 3 if I'm by myself. I could fish 9 or 12. We might moor for the couple days anybody else?
Is anyone camping from Friday night thru Saturday?
'Puffin' is talking about a 3 arch expedition early Saturday .. just to make sure we have something for the BarBQ. Ocean crab if the bar lays down?
It's all about the weather.
The tides are low in the early afternoon and high in the evening. So the crab gear would be out fishing after dark. I'm tempted to throw it in Friday night and haul it at first light. It's high 7ish Saturday morning. Or anyone crazy enough to crab after dark (!!!!) could get their gear back Saturday night after the jetty party.

BRshooter - I think if we all bring a lantern or 2 we will have plenty of light. If somebody wants to bring a generator and lantern help yourself. I think I will have to many toys in the truck already with a crabbing day planned before the BBQ to mess with a generator and lights.

Well I'm bringing the 8 carab pots that I own. (would have nine but some jerk stoled one last year) I'm bringing my boat but it's only an 16' so I won't be crossing any bars. I'm going to either crab Tillamook or I may go down to Netarts for the day, if the tides are right.
I am coming down Friday night and staying in the full hookups, if there is room. And so if you need some pots I have some. I only have 3 rings though. I also have a generator if you want me to bring it. I haven't had this generator up and running for at least 5 years of hunting season. (that's when I bought my camper with a generator and didn't need it any more)I don't even know if the damn thing even will start let alone run.

Pilar - it will be late before I make it to Tillamook on Friday night. I would like to drop them Friday night and pull them on Saturday sometime, but if I am not the first person on the bay Saturday morning the pots will be emptied by a crab pot pirate. I hate to go thru the effort so somebody else can have some crab. I think I will wait and drop them Saturday morning and keep an eye on them. With the late evening festivities Saturday, I will have to get some sleep somewhere along the way, so I will probably forego the Friday night crabbing.
Alien landing strip I think that is what it looked like last year.

Well Roy, I may not be able to make it to the Oyster roast this weekend. Had everything ready to go and the boat equipment put aside for after Thursday fishing trip, I could load Camper on in 10 minutes and the boat with crab pots and wood, hookup the boat and head out.
Well than Dale came home and said he had made reservations for us at the Rhinelander for dinner on Saturday night for our anniversary (OOPS forgot about that) I asked him to go to the coast with us, but he has to work Saturday morning and Sunday. So, I may not make it.
I had it all planned out and all the tackle bought. Why do men do this? I'm the one who is suppose to remember the anniversay, not him.

Here is a crabbing question for Saturday. I have always dropped my traps in the west channel near crab harbor. With all fresh water dumping into the bay from the rain, is it advisable to drop a few traps out toward the jetty? I know I have seen people crabbing in a couple of areas farther out. Any thoughts on this?

I found an article in todays Tillamook online newspaper. Here is the article under the picture of the coast guard tower which shows lots of debri in the parking lot near the coast guard tower. I will get to see it for myself on Saturday.
The County Emergency Management Department is working with the Port of Garibaldi and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to find funding for an emergency measure to protect the North Jetty from further erosion. Due to large winter storm events, the jetty is close to breaching and placing the U.S. Coast Guard’s observation tower (in photo) in peril. The driftwood-strewn parking lot at Barview Park shows evidence of high surf and logs that officials fear may damage or destroy the tower. The Port of Garibaldi and the U.S. Coast Guard concur that a major emergency condition exists on the jetty structure. Tillamook County Emergency Management Director Tom Manning also supports the emergency actions proposed for a temporary emergency measure which would stabilize the erosion until a permanent solutin is developed in the next two years.

Slow Roll - I cant read the predictions either, but I know if it is too rough out near the coast guard tower, we can move in to where the jetty meets HWY 101. There is a big parking lot at the entrance to the campground that we can park at and walk over to a much more protected area if we have to. I dont think the fishing is as good at this spot, but I have had some good nights at this location. We will be able to fish at least.
Usually at the tide change which isnt much after dark, the waves usually lay down quite a bit.

I'll be heading down Friday afternoon and will be there til Sunday.
By the way, STZII just might be coming down on Saturday afternoon, and staying the night. He flies home late from Denver, and if he can talk his wife into loading up the camper, they might be down too. He doesn't like Oysters Can you imagine someone who doesn't like oysters? Pilar,
Are you going to moor in one of the slips at Garibaldi Marina? We were planning on hitting the bay at daylight on Saturday, and crab until 1:30 or 2:00. We were going to leave our traps out Saturday night and go pick them up first thing Sunday morning. Sure seems easier to just moor the boat Saturday night than to fuss with loading and launching again in the morning. Doesn't it cost about 10 or 12 bucks? How is security at the Marina vs the Western Royal Inn? I would think about the same. I guess I can park the trailer near the hotel office and put a hitch lock on it. Any suggestions? Should I worry?
