Trout Fly Fishing Challenge
Announcing the 2010 Ifish Fly Fishing Competition
This competition is similar to previous years’ contests with several important changes.
Trout Rules
You do not need to announce that you want to enter. If you are registered on Ifish with at least ten previous posts, you are eligible.
This competition will run from 1 May 2010 through 14 April 2011 with three prizes.
It is my intent that the competition will start again for another full year starting 15 April 2011.
Trout Fly Fishing Challenge – 2010/2011
This is an Ifish approved event.
Competition organizer, judge and prize contributor is AndyK.
Competition will run from May 1, 2010 through April 15, 2011.
There are three categories for the competition:
1. Largest fly caught trout (or char) from still waters in Oregon, Washington or Idaho during the period 1 May through 31 October 2010. Prize is a fly line selected by winner (except multi-tip lines).
2. Largest fly caught trout (or char) from moving waters or salt water in Oregon, Washington or Idaho during the period 1 May through 31 October 2010. Prize is a fly line selected by winner (except multi-tip lines).
3. Largest fly caught trout (or char) in Oregon, Washington or Idaho during the period 1 November 2010 through 15 April 2011. Prize is a fly line selected by winner (except multi-tip lines).
Steelhead are excluded from this competition. The Departments of F&W plant excess steelhead in lakes. These fish are adipose fin clipped and are also excluded from the competition.
Prize contributor (AndyK) is eligible to win under all categories.
Fly-fishing consists of two elements: fly casting and the use of a fly. Absence of one of these elements is not fly-fishing. Fly fishing rules are the same as IGFA fly fishing rules with following clarifications and additions:
Any legal fly-fishing method using standard fly fishing rod, line and reel is acceptable except trolling/back trolling.
Spey rods are acceptable.
Use of additional weight on fly leader (i.e. split shot) and indicators is allowed, as long as fisherman is still fly-casting (i.e. the weight of the line must carry the fly rather than the weight of the fly, split shot and/or indicator carrying the line).
Fly must meet the legal definition of a fly in Oregon, Washington and Idaho. Articulated and tube flies are acceptable.
Three flies (maximum) may be used. That is a main fly and one or two trailers or droppers (IGFA rules prohibit use of a dropper fly).
Scent and/or scented fly tying materials are not allowed.
Rubber flies or eggs are not allowed. Flies tied with fly tying foam are acceptable.
A jig is not a fly. If the “fly” is tied on a jig hook, it is a jig, not a fly.
Trout must be hooked in the mouth (Washington regulations allow hooking a fish anywhere on the head forward of the gills, which is not acceptable in this competition).
All entries must have a photo posted on the Ifish Fly Fishing board within one week of being caught. Exceptions will be made with concurrence of administrator due to unusual circumstances. Photo will be taken on the river/stream/lake/pond where the fish was caught with the fly gear (rod and reel) used displayed in the photo.
Trout that are to be released may be briefly held above the water for a picture, but pictures of fish lying totally out of the water on the bank or on a boat etc. are not acceptable. It is preferable if the trout is only partially removed from the water for photo purposes.
A participant may win more then one prize in the three main categories.
Largest trout (char) will be determined by length, not weight (since native fish should not to be removed from the water). Length is from the end of the nose to the center of the tail. Measurements will be to the ¼ inch and shall be rounded down.
In the event of a tie, the first entry will be the winner.
Any person registered on Ifish with more than ten posts is eligible. There is no entry fee.
Entries do not need to disclose the exact location where the trout was caught in the post (except whether it was moving waters, still waters or the salt and the state). However, the administrator must be advised of the location (if requested) to determine the qualification of the entry. Locations will not be disclosed on the board except for the winning entries when announced.
Entrants will be disqualified from further participation in the contest for the following reasons:
1. Illegal conduct.
2. Unsportsmanlike conduct.
3. Mistreatment of a trout that is to be released.

I don't know about guides being eligible! They know where all the big fish lie and how to catch them. What chance does someone like me have?

The trout "challenge" is now more of a contest.
I also decided to have the contest run all year since I seem to catch my largest trout in late fall/early spring like this LBC Bull I caught a couple weeks ago:

Re: Trout Fly Fishing Challenge
Sounds fun. I'm not throwing stones - I think its awesome that you set these challenges on your own time - I was just thinking that for future challenges it might be fun to have catagories...i.e. largest rainbow, brown, cutthroat, brookie, bull trout, etc. Just a thought and it might result in more fish pictures.

A qualifying entry! Good job and great fish!
I'll start a thread for entries when I return home.

Re: Trout Fly Fishing Challenge
Didn't get a tape but thought it'd be nice to add to the collection of pretty fish.
Little Tree Lake on 6/5/10 5wt with a 3x tippet and an orange beaded wooly bugger.

(Will be looking for the original picture to see if it includes the rod/reel.)

Re: Trout Fly Fishing Challenge
I forgot to start a thread for entries in the trout competition! Right now, Bratchek has the largest trout from "moving" waters at 23 3/4 inches.
Both Spade and Fishcentral posted large trout from stillwaters, but had no measurements.
Are there any other qualifying trout that were posted between 1 May and 31 October?
BTW, the "winter" trout competition started 1 November...
