F225 w/ 2 yr. warranty or F200 with 5 yr?
Well, Northriver has come through for me again and agreed to a very fair deal on a motor swap. After riding on 5-cents new ride last weekend I'm convinced I need a 4 stroke! I've got a 23 foot Seahawk and currenly have a Yamaha 250 Saltwater series.
The issue is this - they can't get a F225 for 30-45 days. Yamaha has a factory extended warranty (extra 2 years for a total of 5) that expires March 31. So, if I get the 225 I lose the extra 2 year warranty. They do have a F200 in stock that I could have hooked up right away and I'd get the extended warranty. I've looked at the performance figures for both motors on identical boats and the 225 has a higher top end speed by about 5 mph (52 vs 47) and burns about 1 gallon per hour more at cruising speed. I haven't confirmed it yet, but I think the F200 would be about $500 cheaper also.
So, F200 with 5 year warranty, or F225 with 3 year warranty? Isn't it fun to spend someone else's money?
Thanks in advance for the input.
Joe

Weight is identical - 583 I think.

It is the exact same motor, weight, displacement, etc. The difference is tuning. Some say in that scenario, always go with the higher horsepower. I've always felt that in that scenario I'm just paying more for essentially the same thing.

You only mentioned a top speed difference. Does this mean that hole-shot is similar? If it is then I would jump on the 200. You will only be able to use that extra 5mph top-end in about 5% of all real Oregon water situations. And then it's really only a want not a need.
I would bet that you could at least change the pitch on the prop to get the same hole-shot as the 225. Even if it brings your top speed down to say 40 mph, do you really even need to go 40 mph? For the extra two year warranty I would be happy with 40mph

You are choosing either 10% or 20% less horsepower than you are currently running. Only you can decide how important the horsepower is. Most people seem to be of the "more is better" attitude, but personally I'm of the "best bang for the buck" mentality. If 200hp is enough power(the big decision), why pay more to buy a 225hp with a shorter warranty and less fuel economy?

Oh yeah.... from the looks of 5-cents new boat.... I suggest that everyone stay far away unless they have some money burning a hole in their pocket.

Re: F225 w/ 2 yr. warranty or F200 with 5 yr?
The performance data I saw was on a 3900 lb. boat. It's not really comparing apples to oranges though because when they used the 200 they used a 15 1/4 x 19 prop and on the 225 they used a 14 7/8 x 21 prop (both saltwater series). The 200 actually planed faster (3.43 seconds, vs 3.55 on the F225). I just ran a quote through the Yamaha website for a 2 year extended warranty and they want $1900 for it. I'm thinking the F200 with the 2 extra years is the way to go. As long as I get it propped right, it should be plenty of power. I do like going over 50 sometimes, but you're right, Salmonator - nobody really NEEDS to.

Why can't you pay for the big one now and get the warrantee? I'd have to think there would be a way to make that happen.

Problem Solved! Just talked with Joe at Northriver and a F225 just came available! (Either that, or some other poor sap is getting the shaft at my expense!) It will be installed next week, and I get the extended warranty!

Good Joe looks like the problem is taken care of! When I was leaving you a message my phone died... I'm glad you got the 225, that should push your boat just fine and then some
Make sure NR puts some tranie fluid in this time
