Default Rogue River Question

My wife has signed us up for a group float trip on the Rogue, second week of August.

This is a sight seeing type trip and not a fishing trip, but I've been told I can bring a rod and fish at the lodges when we stop for the night.

The two stopping places are Black Bar Lodge and Marial Lodge.

I know nothing about fishing the Rogue.

Is it worth bringing a flyrod to fish these two spots or would it just be casting practice and an oppurtunity to get poison oak?

The water at the lodges is not particularly good fly water...the exception being Black Bar where you can walk downstream towards Jenny Creek. August is a little early for Steelhead, but not unreasonable to think you might entice one to the fly. The Rogue also has Half-Pounders, which are immature Steelhead on a non-spawning run upriver. They take flies readily and are great fun. I personally like small flies for Rogue fish. Most of my patterns are tied on size 10 double hooks (see my avatar). The Red Ant pictured has accounted for hundreds and hundreds of fish over the last 40 years. Fish a floating line, and don't disregard the slower water above the breaks. The most fish will likely be lower in the river, from Paradise downstream. One the last day of your trip coax your group into letting you fish Peyton Riffle. Start very high in the riffle near the "Roman road" I've had incredible days of fishing there

Trip of a lifetime! Both lodges are great experiences, and the scenery combined with whitewater is legendary

I just floated the lower for the first time this year before permits. I have spent alot of time down there it is truely an amazing place. glo bugs never hurt to throw out. If you bring a spinning rod make sure you have some panther martins in black and yellow and some little cleo's silver color they both work awsome for half pounders good luck and say hi to pat and lori at marial from josh and shawna they are wonderful friends and great host

Thanks for the information. Will probably skip the fly rod and just concentrate on taking pictures. I'll just call this one a scouting trip for future fishing expeditions.

Unless you're a fly only guy (which I understand) the suggestion to bring a spinning rod with some Panther Martin spinners is a good one. You can cast while drifting. The Clay Hill stillwater can be red hot for this. 3/8 oz. Black body with gold blade is good

I am a fishing NUT. Flies, bait, hardware, whatever...

However........

I have floated the wild and scenic stretch four times and never once felt the need to fish. It was just too dang beautiful.

I really like the run at the top end of Marial...nice swing water and has produced a few fish for me over teh years!! Not right where the boats pull in but if you walk up the back a few hundred yards its prety good.
