Default Cabela's coming to Springfield

http://www.oregonlive.com/business/i..._first_or.html

This article does not mention it but I understand that it is going to be in the old Ashley Furniture building.

I have a hard time visualizing what 58,000 square feet will look like. I have been to the Cabela's in Boise and it does not seem that large, about the size of a Sportsmans Warehouse.

FWIW the Boise store is 132,000 sq feet, and the one up in Lacey is 185,000 feet, so this one will be quite a bit smaller.

My understanding is that the "new store" will be in the style of the current stores in Lacey and the Boise store. The plan is to build in a location between Salem and Eugene.

From the article posted above.

Quote:
SIDNEY, Neb. -- Outdoor outfitter Cabela's Inc. has announced plans to open its first Oregon store.

Cabela's intends to open a 58,000-square-foot retail outlet in Springfield's Gateway Mall next spring.
At 58,000 ft2 it's going to be about the size of a Wholesale Sports (former Sportsmans). Don't expect big displays of taxidermy and aquariums.

Check out the article and the one in the Salem Statesman. They will be remodeling a former furniture store in Springfield, that across the freeeway from Eugene.

Well one thing is for sure its about time, another thing is that it will be small. I just looked up info on the Boise store and it is listed as a 132,000 sq. ft. retail showroom. So at 58,000 I would have to say it won't be the shock and awe as you enter the store like some that are back east. Just the same I welcome them with open arms. Here is what I got off their websiteSIDNEY, Neb. (May 4, 2010) -- Cabela's Incorporated (NYSE: CAB) and General Growth Properties (NYSE: GGP) announced today plans to bring the Cabela's retail experience to loyal customers in Springfield, Ore., and the surrounding area.

Cabela's expects to open the Springfield store in early spring of 2011. The 58,000-square-foot store will anchor the west side of Gateway Mall at 3000 Gateway Street in retail space previously occupied by Ashley Furniture. It will be Cabela's first retail store in Oregon.

The building's exterior will reflect Cabela's traditional store model, while the inside will highlight the company's next-generation layout, which includes an aquarium, conservation-themed wildlife displays and trophy animal mounts. The store will also have a Gun Library, Fly-Fishing Shop, General Store and Bargain Cave. Construction is expected to start in mid-August 2010.

"Oregonians have a rich tradition of enjoying the outdoors," said Cabela's Chief Executive Officer Tommy Millner. "Fishing, hunting and wildlife viewing activities are a way of life for folks who live along the I-5 Corridor and throughout the state. We're thrilled Springfield will be the location of Cabela's first store in Oregon."

Cabela's expects to attract Oregon residents, as well as the many travelers who come to take advantage of the region's abundant sporting opportunities. Showcasing thousands of products, including hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, boating and wildlife watching gear, as well as outdoor clothing and outdoor-themed gifts and furnishings, the company is famous for its strong brand and world-famous reputation for quality merchandise, value and legendary customer service.

Cabela's typically attracts passionate outdoorsmen and women, who join the Cabela's family of employees famous for their excellent customer service, outdoor lifestyle and detailed knowledge of outdoor products.

"We're excited to be a part of the Springfield community," said Millner. "We have an outstanding customer base in the area and we expect to employ an equally exceptional local workforce."

Gateway Mall, which opened in 1990, features a blend of retail shopping, entertainment and dining opportunities, including three department stores, an indoor children's play area, 29 theater screens and an extensive selection of national retailers and restaurants. The mall features increased access via the area's award-winning rapid transit system. For more information, please visit www.gatewaymall.com.

Heck, for us in the PDX area, it's 6 one way, half dozen the other on whether to go to Lacey or Spring-tucky (no offense Springfielders, I'm originally from the Eugene/Springfield area).

Guess it gives me another excuse to visit the padres. "What's that hon? Why are we pulling off at the Gateway mall exit again? Oh, you know, I thought you'd want to go to the mall...hey, look at that! It's a Cabelas! Fancy that!"
