Going to Wallowa Lake Any Fly Streams Around?
We are headed over to Wallowa Lake May 23rd - 26th, I would really like to wet a fly or two. But I know nothing about the area, we will be camping in the camp ground and using the big boat for kokes. I could put my toon in I have heard that there are some nice rainbows on the edges of the lake. A stream close would be fun also. Any input would be greatly appreciated . Thanks in advance.

If you are staying at the campground, there is a stream that the kokanee swim up that dumps into the lake just before you get to the campground. You can't miss it. There are always flyfishermen right where the creek dumps in. I hear they do really well on the trout there. Looks like a pretty popular spot so I don't see why they wouldn't be catching fish.

The Wallowa River has some great fishing and easy access. If the river is not running too high you might float it with your toon. Best of luck, anagama

Definitely check out the Wallowa River, there are some nice fish in there (both whities and native redbands). Most of those rivers over there hold at least some trout, certainly start with the Wallowa.

If the river is a bit colored as it is in spring, don't let it stop you. Just fish close to the edges, esp. any cut banks, and you will find fish!!!

Wallowa, Minam, Imnaha, Wenaha, Grand Ronde....all depending on how far you want to travel.

Be sure to check your regs. Some of these streams are closed until later in May.

Re: Going to Wallowa Lake Any Fly Streams Around?
in the upper lake there is a river that has a real good flow into the lake
! years ago while it was snowing noless , i waded out with flyrod and casted accross current and swung flies in the lake where the river current slowed . caught alot of rainbows - hens were smaller then the bucks and the bucks were in their spawning colors and were beautiful ! average fish was 12 to 14 ! some bucks went to 18 but lots of fun and easy to fish with waders - getting as far out in water as i could wade ! good luck , and check regs !!!! i was throwing a dry line with nymphs ! but might get bigger fish with sinking line and streamers !

I'd recommend stopping at the fly shop in Joseph, which you'll drive right by a few minutes before you get to the lake those guys can offer some good guidance.

Re: Going to Wallowa Lake Any Fly Streams Around?
I concur.... stop at the fly shop. They are extremely helpful and friendly. If you're at the campground, walk to the day use parking area on the North end and to the East of it there is the mouth of the river coming into the South end of the lake. Fish the mouth with sinking line and worm or egg patterns. Trout action should be steady and my son caught a massive Koke there on a 4 weight rod a couple years ago.
This is my son when he was 7 at a secret lake nearby Joseph. Evening bite is great for kids.

Re: Going to Wallowa Lake Any Fly Streams Around?
Grew up in "the county". In my opinion Wallowa river is best, below the minam store walk down the railroad tracks. the canyon can fish well too. Water level could be the issue right now. Sometimes below the dam at the lake it can fish well too. If you have a boat, I would fight the armada this weekend and try for some kokes.

Re: Going to Wallowa Lake Any Fly Streams Around?
Fish right where the river dumps into the lake. streamers swung deep can pick up big fish early morning & evening, tiny nymph & pupae patterns during the "heat" of the day, if it does turn out to be a warm day. If the day stays cold, keep fishing mid-range to deep with big ugly things. There are nice sized rainbows and a few bass-shaped kokes to be had if you give it some good attention.....
