Default Crane prairie

Thought about heading up to Crane this weekend. I know this is a fairly shallow lake from the shore. But could someone tell me if there are any good spots from the bank on this lake?

Might still be a lot of snow up there yet, but the Quinn river channel is good.

According to the Bend newspaper Rock Creek and Quinn are still gated. Only Crane Prarie Campground is open. Not really a shore fishing lake.

If the lake is at full pool there is a section that goes right up to the edge of the cascade lakes hiway. Early in the season there is a good possibility of catching some from the bank there. This section of the lake warms up before many others. The fish are more active there as a result. A bobber and bait set at 3 or 4 feet and you should be good to go.

In between rock creek and quinn river campgrounds there is a osprey observation road. I think it is called osprey point, which is a point of land that juts out into the lake. You can probably catch some fish off of this part.

You might have better luck catching bass off the bank, as they used to be piled up by any rocky outcropping . . . up by the lodge, up by rock creek campground, osprey point. Note that all of this is 10 year old advice.

You can nip around the edges from the bank, but to really enjoy Crane you need a boat or float tube.
One of my favorite Crane trips was in April 1985. My brother and I took a 10' jon boat up there and had some serious fun. Had to outrun the whitecaps on one day

Thanks for the advice fellow ifishers. Ended up going out on the boat instead. And despite the cold wind, I'm glad I did. I went 5 for 5 in 3 hours. 3 nice brookies and 2 good bows in the 15" range. My dad ended up with a nice 3lber.

Umpqua what was working at Crane? I have flashbacks of huge trout we use to catch out of there about 15 years ago.

We were trolling. No weight. No flashers. Just lures with a small split shot. Got on the water early (7AM). I had no idea that some of these nice brook trout would hammer a good size plug. I always associated brookies with light takle, flies, etc.....Unreal!
Went back today and the bite was off.
