Default Rod Selection Advice ?

I am looking for a boat trout rod for trolling lake trolls and possibly 1 - 1/2 oz, of led using 8 lb, Mono. The pole I have now is not always sensitive enough for me to feel strikes while pulling 3 - 4 blades. I believe I am missing strikes. My price range is $50 Max. Any suggestions or is this an impossibility? Thanks much

If only for trolling I'd look at the lami classic glass CG70 I think. Its designed for kokanee but I'd think it would be great for what your talking about. I just got one for 50 at Bimart. If you also want to stop and bait fish or cast spinners then you might want to go graphite. Another option is a daiwa spinmatic these come in casting and spinning and are usually 20 bucks or so. They are a slow action graphite but could still be used for bait and spinner fishing just not going to be ultra senstive like a really fast action graphite rod.

We have several brands of 6'6" graphite rods that work well for dragging lake trolls, the ones that I like best are a St Croix and a Pfleuger in Medium-light action. I also run a Run a yellow Eagle claw Light action glass 6'6" rod but it seems to be working a little too hard, the lake troll and sinker have it folded up pretty good before the fish hits.

The Eagle claw is on the right in the picture and a medium action pfleuger is on the right, I think that the angle of the picture doesn't allow you to really appreciate how hard the EC is actually working. Like I said I prefer the ML action graphite rods for dragging Laketrolls.

Hi Doc
Thanks for taking the time to reply. And with Pics! I will give it a try. BTW I believe I recognize that body of water being a graduate of Madras High.

Class of ......? Was a White Buffalo freshman year.

I think you'd find the Okuma SST Kokanee or Kokanee Pro have the right action for trolling, and enough backbone to pull a medium to small lake troll.

dang, you missed out on the Lami kokanee downrigger rod sale. Its 7 ft, 4 - 8 pound rating, and i got it for 44 bucks at the sportsmans show. I'd keep and eye out for it at fishermans though. Probably will go on sale again. can't wait to catch some fat rainbows trolling with that rod at diamond!

Yep, I am sure you do know that body of water, the pic was taken during the LBC bull/koke fest. I guess just for full disclosure I should mention that the brown rod in the middle is a 5'6" fenwick ultralight clipped into the DR. I love that little rod, even a 6" fish will fold it up and make it seem like I am reeling in a monster. For regular trolling however, I could never hook a lake troll on it, I have used it for pulling spoons for stockers and found that I had to point it back at the fish until after hook-up so that there was enough backbone (drag) to get a good hook-up before I picked it up and started the fight.

Here is the other side of the boat with an Anglers touch Kokanee rod in the DR along with a ML St Croix on the Shuttle Hawk. That is a Medium Pfleuger Behind the little girl and ML of which I cannot remember the make on the left which I think makes an Ideal rod for Dragging Hardware for kokes.

I agree with moknots, the okuma kokanee pro rods are nice for lake trolls, down riggers and light action also. I"ve got three and i'd buy more. Bi-mart has them for about $35
