Saturday fishing...where though
Working on a KP for Saturday... trying to figure out what would be productive. I know my spot on the Trask will produce, that is a slam dunk spot for steelhead. However, my wife has arranged a dinner party (stop laughing) at our house Saturday night (no, i was not consulted ahead of time)....so I dont know that I can do the 2 hour drive to the Trask.
Where else for Steelies??

Re: Saturday fishing...where though
Forget steelies, the springers are in! Smelt are now entering the Sandy, so the mouth should be good. Also, springers have been recently taken in the slough, in the St Johns area, and also in Oregon city. One taken this morning was 31 lbs. So grab some fresh smelt, or rig prawns, and fish locally; that's my plan.

Re: Saturday fishing...where though
I am probably ill prepared for springers...I could probably land one, but not too easily. My plan right now is to hit either Oxbow or MacIver (sp??) park...possibly with prawns.

How are you fishing a smelt for a salmon?

Re: Saturday fishing...where though
Why in the world would anyone want to go spend many hours in a boat hoping for a bite from a springer when theres still all those big, beautiful native steelhead willing to bite a line?
I'd rather go have some serious action with steelies than maybe get one springer. I think salmon fishing is something I do while I'm waiting for the steelhead to heat up.

Re: Saturday fishing...where though
You said it Rich, with the real chance of getting 2 t o10 steelhead in a day why fish when there's only a slight chance at a salmon. I'll be hitting the salmon when they are thick.

Re: Saturday fishing...where though
Back to the smelt question, are you guys trolling them whole or what? I've yet to see anyone try that but the fish are apparently munching on them.
