Whats the deal with Lemon Joy?
Why is LJ so popular for cleaning hand, lures, boats, etc.? It seems like everyone here uses it for cleaning something fishing related. Is it the smell? Fish like the scent? What am I missing?

Re: Whats the deal with Lemon Joy?
yeah it is mostly the lemon scent the fish seem to like it and are not turned off by it. I also add a little bit of anise oil to the mix which helps allot. But that is the only soap I use for my hands when fishing. For lures try crest toothpaste as this also has been discussed in deatil on previouse post but for spinners this is great.

Re: Whats the deal with Lemon Joy?
Lemon Joy has been used for a long time. Its the only cleaning product that I know that for sure wont scare the fish away. I use it for cleaning only but wouldnt use it for actual scent.

What other soap can you buy for less than a buck at a .99 Cent store
Well, maybe Ajax...
I bet one of the resident Ifish Guides can enlighten us....

Re: Whats the deal with Lemon Joy?
I use it because, a Friend of my Dads Dad use to use it on all of his commercial salmon gear years ago. ICan't rember when my dad did not have some in the boat. So we continue the tradition

Re: Whats the deal with Lemon Joy?
It's been used for a long, long time by commercials. Since it was good enough for them it was good enough for the sporties. It's been used for a long time by some sports fisherman too but just recently it's gotten a lot of publicity so now everyone is using it. Kind of like WD-40 20 years ago.....
It is a strong oil remover so it takes the offensive skin oils (and other scents) off your hands and gear. "One spoon full will do a load of dishes"
The fish seem to either like it or they are not bothered at all by it.

Don't know Tonto but I have some banana Smelly Jelly. They make it for bass fisherman and I hear it works for lake trout.

It does work pretty good as a scent by itself.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">It doesn't even need to be lemon scented. Any dish detergent will do what you need, which is getting the nasty odors off your hands and lures. I've been stealing and using whatever dish soap we have in the kitchen (costco special) for years, and I catch a few using it. I just use it to clean my hands at the beginning and throughout the day, and to clean the lures and the end of the day.

Re: Whats the deal with Lemon Joy?
You can use your Lemon Joy, but if you have anything that is OIL or Grease related, you better be using DAWN, and they have it in all kinds of flavors, but Dawn will cut the grease.

Re: Whats the deal with Lemon Joy?
I don't know if this is true or not, but I was told by a guide that lemon joy was one of the only soaps that suds up in the salt{ocean}. He was probably pullin my chain, but maybe not. I saw on an earlier post that the commerical guys use it, and that is how the sport guys got wind of it. So maybe the above statement holds merit. I do feel any soap will do the trick, but I'm sticking with the LJ.

detergent will work ... as long as it's Lemon Joy!!
