Default HELP - how to use raise&dive dodger?

I have 2 Dodgers that I bought at a garage sale a few years ago. They are called Superdees, formerly Superlex they are hinged and rise & dive. This seams like a good idea to me, for shallow trolling it states vertical movement of 5 feet, Use 4 to 6 oz. weight ten feet ahead of the dodger,Speed about 3 m.p.h.
For deeper trolling Vertical movement of 9 feet, use 8 to 10 oz. 20 feet ahead of dodger at 3 m.p.h. Bait 18 to 20 inches behind dodger.
The part I don't get is when they say the up and down is activated by the pull of the line and the slip-weight on the line ahead of the superdee. How could you rig a slip sinker that far up the line or am I just not thinking right  .
Please tell me so I can feel smart again

Thanks - Fishalot
