Our son Wade, friend Travis and I fished Rowland Lake, located on Hwy 14 between White Salmon and Lyle Washington, on opening day - April 24. We started off slow trolling F-4 and F-5 Flat Fish tipped with Gulp! maggots. We had two fish on at once before we'd gone 200 feet from the boat ramp. Although we lost one the other hit our trout net at 15 inches. We rig our Flat Fish with double split rings and, with a felt pen, paint black/ red "dot" tail eyes on them - so they can see where they've been. The trout seem to zero in on the tail eyes; especially when we tip one prong of the treble hook with a Gulp! maggot. Although the silver and gold Flat Fish colors are our favorites, we use black-glitter, rainbow trout and frog patterns too. I used a Rooster Tail Troll with 40-inch leader and Flat Fish, which attracted trout to all our lures.
Although we caught most of our limit on the above, for fun we later switched to the crawl-retrieve casting method using 3" trout worms on a #6 single hook and a #5 split-shot for casting weight crimped about 20 inches up the line.
Best,
