Are the springers in the Channel???????
Without question This sea lion agrees. Fished the channel again today, and didnt have any luck. I did get to wrestle a nate nook to the boat yesterday afternoon though. It's not that they were not there today, because i seen 3 fish caught, and there was only about 6 boats near me. This sea lion in the channel today, wasn't having any problems finding them
today was the first time seeing sea lion in the channnel.... I have seen many seals, Thought it was interesting, and would share with Ya"ll.
Get out there and get some springers

Re: Are the springers in the Channel???????
Spent Sat in the channel. Saw a couple of Sea Lions. Watched them real close & saw at least one of them get two large carp. We weren't sure at first but upon further review with the bino's it was definatly carp, big ones at that. No Salmon spotted though.

Re: Are the springers in the Channel???????
I saw a sea lion with what looked like a huge carp last friday in the channel. Fish tail was similar to a salmon but the overall fish color was kind of dark yellow. Again no keeper sturgeon but fed 12 pike minnows to the eagles. The Bald eagles were picking up the fish near the boat but those big Goldens wouldn't come that close. Gotta get a camera.

Re: Are the springers in the Channel???????
Fished off of Warrior Rock most of yesterday but did spend the afternoon in the Channel down around "6". Water is getting better and saw one fish taken by a troller and talked to another guy that had one. I caught a 20+ unmarked chinook and lost another one off of Warrior Rock but only saw two other fish taken for the morning. Started off slow and tapered off.

Re: Are the springers in the Channel???????
Zaq...I'm catching Northern pike minnows and bonking them, heaving em overboard and the eagles swoop down and snatch em out of the water. When and if the ********* bounty starts up I'll quit feeding the birds. Once I start feeding, the eagles come and roost and wait. Been doing this the last couple of weeks just above 6 in the channel. Bring a camera...I've had Bald eagles within 10 yards of the boat.
The fish have to float...my frozen smelt were sinking

Re: Are the springers in the Channel???????
It sure would be nice to convince the Sea Lions that carp is a better delicacy then Salmon. I wish they would come up and clear out a bunch of carp then get sooo full that they would head back to the ocean and forget that Salmon on my line.

Re: Are the springers in the Channel???????
Sunday afternoon, when we took out, the ODFW guy had checked 2 springers for 11 boats, and had heard of a couple others caught up towards Coon Island.
For us, out in the Columbia we tried three different spots, fishing the last three hours of the outgoing tide, but didn't get a bump on our Kfish.

Re: Are the springers in the Channel???????
When you talk about coon island are you talking about fishing in the channel? Or the Columbia?
Where is Coon Island?
Where is Sand Island?

Re: Are the springers in the Channel???????
Coon Island is in the channel about a mile or so upstream from the Gilbert River. Can't miss it, it splits the channel right down the middle, and there's public docks on both sides.
Sand Island is on the CR across from St Helens.

Yes Coon Island is just a myth,
merely a springer Xanadu.

Re: Are the springers in the Channel???????
Cool story on those eagles.
Sitting here in the office reading about them makes the day a little easier. Show us some pictures if you can. Those sea lions always reminded me of a dogs head. When I fish offshore they can follow your gear and grab a free lunch.

Re: Are the springers in the Channel???????
I think that those fish that I had on last weekend were along coon island. Is that the first boat ramp on the island up from Scapoose Bay Marina about 4 miles? Then just above that there is a dock and on the left side of the island there are signs that say no wake? I was trolling just out from the pillings on the rocky stretch on the mainland. Does that sound like Coon Island?
Is sand Island the Island at the mouth of the MC? Right after the first place that you can cut onto the CR?
I have fished that area a lot but I don't know the names of everything.
