On a business trip to Enterprise this week I spent the night up at Wallowa Lake Inn in a neat little cabin. While checking in, I happened to inquire about the big one that didn't get away and the nice folks at the inn and later that evening on my way down to Joesph to find a sandwich, a guy taking his boat out, shared the following current koke fishing at Wallowa Lake info. With all the talk from Ifishers about hitting Wallowa thought you would find it helpful.
Seems as though the "average" seems to be 4 to 5 pounds, with a few reaching 7+ pounds. As in most koke lakes both jigging and trolling take fish with with the trolling being most productive. Also the gear used by the trollers "appears" to be pretty much the same as I read about down here, with words like dodgers and slings in the conversation, along with hootchies and stuff. (Please excuse my ignorance on the trolling stuff as I still haven't found my way into that fishing arena) The fella taking his boat out had two very nice kokes. "halfers" he called them. Yes I asked him why "halfers", and he says cause their "half way" to ten pounds! Claims he has seen kokes in Wallowa that he knows will go 10 pounds. In either case there was no mention of smaller or average kokanee that we see down here???
This guy took up trolling because the depths he had to jig at certain times of the year were a little much. Same kind of jigs as down here only mostly 1 oz. to handle the depths. Just like the fish he had in his box he was also very nice. As I watched him drive away I noticed my camera on the dash of my truck
Not much info but hope it helps those making the trek. One thing you can count on for sure the people at the Wallowa Inn are super nice and it is a very beautiful place. Have fun
