Help No Reverse?

1974 merc. 165hp. I/O Model I sterndrive.

Adjusted the shift cable to spec. forward is fine but no reverse????

Any suggestions????

I hate to go to a real mechanic they're spendy.

ps. if your driving through Vernonia on this beautiful sunny day and want to help a brother work on his old boat I have lotsa frosty ones on hand and I believe the wife is making lasagna tonight?????? just a thought.
