Default 2 rod license: note to self.....

When you're fishing with two poles- it might be good to remember to bring them BOTH in when you're done!

Went to Merwin on last Wed.- only caught about 4, lost a couple more- lots of drive-bys.

At the end of the day I was trolling right in front of the ramp with both rods out. Ooops- time to go- reeled in the downrigger rod and drove over to the ramp. Parked on the outside of the dock and got the trailer. Backed up from the dock and then into the ramp and on the trailer. Drove up and across the parking lot to unload and tie-down. After walking around the boat a few times unloading stuff- I got tangled in some fishing line- what's this - what the?.....then I realized I hadn't reeled in the other pole! Yikes, my favorite Z-ray was on there! I started pulling on the line- it went under the boat and was tangled on the trailer- but the line was trailing across the parking lot- I followed it to find my Z-ray laying on the ground! It had a little road rash from bouncing up the ramp and across the pavement- but not too bad a shape!

Also lost a downrigger weight about an hour after I got there. Saw the bounce that meant snag- but before I could jump up and push the up button- it pulled tight and and the weight pulled right out of the snap- straightened the wire clip right out. That was cause for immediate bummin' !!! Went to shore- found a 8-10lb rock and tied some line around it and attached to clip- instant ghetto weight! It weeble wobbled a little, but it sunk just like lead!

We were launching at the Cathedral launch at 0 dark thirty for sturgeon. My buddy had been up late rigging his rod with new stuff. We got everything ready at the back of the lot. Put the rods in rocket launchers and pulled to the ramp. While backing down the ramp my buddy says "check this out some dumb sh&$ lost a bunch of line". He starts wadding it up and it takes him from his pole to an overhanging tree at the back of the lot. The look was .....priceless. I'm still rolling on that one.

First off I wont admitt to anything, BUT Ive also learned a few things about trolling with 2 Rods buy yourself!

First make L- o -n -g --S -l -o-w turns especially when they are close to the surface! You wont believe how much time it takes to unwind 100ft of line from the prop!

It dosn't take a Large Fish to make a Real Mess of 2 lines! 13-14" Kokanee are great at this!

Since this 2 rod thing is new this year, I am sure there will be a learning curve! Maybe some of you can add to the the list!

What I have found out with the two rods that works real good. When you get two fish on at the same time jerk the second one out of the release make sure the drag is fairly loose and let him run. Then real in the first one but keep the boat moving and he will stay behind you.

I thought untangling lines was part of the fun. We ran 8 lines off the back of my boat a couple weeks ago and put 25 kokes in the boat in about 4 hours with only 2 tangles, figured we were pretty lucky.

WOW! 8 lines out! You must have total control of everything!
How many Drs are you using? What are you using to stack them with ? How many people were fishing?

I had 4 poles out this Sat. with 3 of us fishing & only 1 mess caused by the fish & I thought I was doing good.
We did get our limits 5 ea. at Merwin BUT it took all day!

That day we had two long line bull trout plugs out the sides on 8'6" rods, two rods out the sides with sinkers, flashers and spinners. Two rods straight out the back (about 5' apart) with sinkers and dodgers and hootchies or apexes, and finally 2 downrigger lines. There are a couple pictures of another day running 7 lines all for kokes on the LBC fest report thread where I did stack one rigger with a shuttlehawk. The one thing I keep thinking about is the angles/depth of lines that are side by side and trying to vary weight/setback to keep more distance between the lines than just the distance between the rod tips at the boat. Both days we had six fishermen, but for the most part I played deckhand making sure that things got out in a controlled manner.
