Default Herring are gone

took a trip to newport today and was dissapointed, we fished by the south marina on the incomeing tide and not a one herring to be had.we did not see any action anywhere else.I think the end is here but hey ive been known to be wrong before like in 1986.it was however a good day for the gameies so if you go bring your licence and fish with only one rod and I was also warned not to leave the pole unattended, go figure.

I too was out at Newport today, although I did not get there until near high tide. I spent the late afternoon without seeing one fish caught. Probably the most frustrating thing is, the lady at the marina store said even just yesteday was a good day. Oh well. It was a beautiful day to be out, nothing but sunshine. I kind of enjoyed just watching all the boats going in and out. My new boat is still a month away. I watch the other boats and think about the fun I will have with mine.

thanks for the posts so late this evening... I am all packed up for a trip down to Newport for herring and thought I'd log-in in to see if the situation has changed for the herring... so your posts are appreciated, and I think I'll fish the Clakamas tomrrow and call Harry's Bait and Tackle periodically to see when the next big school of heering comes into the bay... thanks

Launched at Newport at 11:00 and headed for the concrete ship. Saw nothing happen but a sunk driftboat being towed by the coast guard. I don't have a clue as to what happened.

No bites throughout the incoming. Saw nothing happening anywhere. I ran out to the jaws and dropped my crab pots and headed back in just ouside of the marina and started picking up some herring at high slack. Didn't get a bunch but got a few and saw others catching as well.

Got about a dozen nice crabs using turkey legs.

Best of luck tomorrow!

Craig C, the jaws are the end of the jetties. Kind of a knarly place to put the rings in my opinion but if the crabs like it what the hey. Maybe they were actually dropped just south of the south jetty? I've seen quite a few there. I'll be headin' out to seal rock tomorrow for some bottom swimmers then crab when we get back inside... Hey ChinookSlayer.. Don't feel frustrated by hearing from the Lady saying should have been here yesterday. The reports from Newport can be absolutely fantastic depending on who you call. They want YOU over there to spend Bucks. THE ONLY report I trust is from Harry's Bait N Tackle!! They tell it like it IS!!!!! Trust'em but remember a report is just that and conditions change.

What BCFishon said.
I was over there yesterday also, the herring were too slow to bother with, the crabbing was middlin poor also.

While we were waiting at the dock for my buddy to park the truck, a sailcat launched.

I told my son "It is going to be tricky for that guy to get out of the marina, with all of these boats. Just as the words left my nouth, a gust of wind caught the cat, and before my son could dive over the motor to stop it, one of the pontoons slammed into the back of our boat. Our boat was fine, but it cracked the tip of the pontoon. Then, another gust spun the Cat, and the spar headed for the windshield. I caught it in time to slow it, it hit the windshield but didn't break anything. We gacve him a shove back out into the channel, but I think we had more fun than the Cat guy yesterday.
