Default Yakima north of Ellensburg

Does anyone have any tips for the Yak between Yakima and Ellensburg?

I have driven the hwy that follows the river up there and have thought that next time I have to go that route that I would put a couple of fly swatters in the truck for a break. I will be up there in 10 days or so...

Thanks in advance,

Mark

I used to fly fish that river between classes @ CWU. I would drive about two miles down stream from the ellensburg gas stations and hook up. The fish will stage at the irrigation inlets. We used to catch alot of fish in the irrigation diches that lead out of the river, but that was 20 years ago and the regs may not allow fishing in them any more. I used to like a hopper cast at the oppisit shore, when they start hoppin around. A leach pattern was allways productive.

Flows are really high and dirty right now.
The river has alot of access for wading but needs to come down to about 1000-1200 CFS before you can get in there.
There is a couple of great flyshops...worleybugger in Eburg, Evening Hatch by the Flying J truckstop off I-90, and Red's further down in the canyon.
All can provide flies and local intel.
Great river if you like small, quality fish.
A 20" fish is a once in a while catch.
I love it over there.

It's a good fishery. Stay in the canyon, or above up at the KOA to Ringer. Fish San Juans for sure. Better yet take a half day with the guys from WorleyBuggger. That river is much nicer from a boat but do what you gotta do.
