The deal with the new server
Since I can't afford a new server for a while, Don, at Seasurf, is going to be lending us a more powerful machine. It is in testing right now.
In two weeks, we should be able to make the move.
This isn't an ideal machine, but should help out until we can muster up the funds for the real one.
Thanks for being patient.
Until then, Infopop has told me that the reason some posts are disappearing, is because of this:
Jen,
There's a hard two-second delay between the time that the UBB writes to the file and it expects a return from the Operating System that has indeed written the file. Your O/S is exceeding the two-second limit. It's taking longer than two second for your O/S to write the files. Your board is too busy for the server it's sitting on. I recommend UBBThreads.
-Jacob
I don't want to change to threads, so he said a new server will solve this.
If you happen to have a post go "poof" on you, please e mail me. Often, if I clear the cache, it will reappear.
Jen

Re: The deal with the new server
So what's a new zoom-zoom server cost, one that can handle all the traffic you get??

Re: The deal with the new server
The last two or three months have put a heavy load on the old machine. It's smokin.
Check out last month and the month before.
Anyway, This thread describes infopops recommendation.
We don't have to have THAT big of one, but close.

Re: The deal with the new server
I say we go for the new server now. $20 a head would more than cover it, what do you think Jen?....Bait, gas, food, river shuttle, gear, etc., hell we spend that much or more on any given day on the river. If you want to collect some donations from the ifish family now I would be more than happy to donate.....I'll through in the first $20 and challenge someone else to meet or beat me. Maybe a sweet little prize for the largest donation, what do you say....should we go for it?

Re: The deal with the new server
20 bucks a head. I'm in. That's a small price to pay for all the good information I have gleened from this board. Where do we send the money? Come on guys you know this is the best board around. Let's keep it that way. Where else can you get more bang for your buck?

Re: The deal with the new server
I set up an account for such donations.
This way, if anyone ever questions where the money is spent, I have records.
I have collected 30 dollars already towards the new server.
If you would like to donate to it, the faster we collect it, the sooner we will get it.
If you want to wait until the April fundraiser, that is fine too.
Here is the Donation page.
Here is the list of donors.
If you would please let me know, on the form, or in the mail, if you would like to be listed as name, moniker or anonymous, add that too.
Thanks,
Jen

Re: The deal with the new server
I got some pay pal donations!
Thank you, you guys!
COOL! We'll be zippin along in no time.
Only $1,930 to go now!
Thank you so very much! This is possible!
Except... Sprint just told me that DSL probably never will be out here, and I'll be stuck on a dial up forever.... and ever... and ever.
But you know, dial ups aren't so bad. I can fish while I'm waiting for the page to load.

Re: The deal with the new server
Yes I have! And more than once!
Down to 1,860.00!!!
This is kind of fun!
But guess what???
I had my first hummingbird just show up!
YAY!
It's SPRING!
Jen
I'll keep you tallied on this!
Please, guys, let me know how you would like to be listed on the honors sheet.
Is there a space on the pay pal form for that?
A place for notes? I think so.
Thanks!
Jen

You know what would be neat?
To have everyone sign the server that helped to pay for it!
Then an ifish sticker on the top!
This is OUR VERY OWN SERVER!

Re: The deal with the new server
Make sure the new server has room for expansion. You don't want to have to do this again in 6 months.....
More than happy to kick in my $20. Please add my moniker to my name on the list when you get a chance, Jen. Thanks.
Now sit back and watch the money pour in!

Re: The deal with the new server
Jennie, please list your P.O. Box again and I'll get a check in the mail. I know I spill more than 20 bucks on a routine basis. Your site is something I look forward to hitting every day. Count me in for whatever I can sneak out of my wife's purse, and she's got money she hasn't even spent yet. There has to be a lot of money in the checking account, we just got o bunch of checks.

Re: The deal with the new server
Yes, we did!
Now at 1505.00!!!
Who is the super tech on ifish that can help me go buy this?
Or should I just go by the infopop suggestions?
I really could use some help in purchasing. I don't know very much about this kind of thing.
A team of experts to help purchase? Please?

I know it sounds like a cliche but "my check is in the mail." Twenty bucks.
I've learned too much from ifish and enjoyed F3.5 and hope to attend future floatillas to not support this site. I logon AT LEAST once a day and most days several times. It's the best web site for NW fishing.

Re: The deal with the new server
Jen, just a thought about you posting a running total for the new server. I'm afraid that the donations will stop as soon as you get enough money to buy it. I know that you probably need much more than just a new server. The way it's going you'll have enough before the April fundraising drive. There is no sense in stopping at just 2K.
You've done such a great job with the site and juggling family life I can't imagine how great it would be if you had a better budget. I been a webmaster before so I know how much work you're doing.

Re: The deal with the new server
I thought about that.
It's too much fun though, to do the total!!!
It's fun to see the progress!
The Discussion Board part of ifish is kind of separate from the rest of ifish. I have operating costs and expenses for the other, plus I have income from the other. It balances out.
It is the discussion board, however, that uses up the most of the bandwidth and power. The costs of running this much info back and fourth is about 99.00 a month on most ISP's.
If I get more, to help with UBB costs, and monthly server costs, great.
If not, I did it last year, and I'm still going this year.
This server expense helps A TON!!!
Bill teases me a lot about ifish. I tell him I have to work, he says, "Yes... how much you makin now? More than 2.50 an hour, yet?"
Hey, the bennies are great!
I take my breaks on the river!

Dear Lurkers: We know you are out there and enjoy the site as much as the frequent posters. Now would be an excellent time to step up and get a moniker and an introduction along with your donation. Best $20 you'll spend this year.
What better way to get welcomed into the family!

Maybe you could use a satellite dish instead of phone wire DSL or dial-up.
I hear they are getting cheaper everyday.

Last I checked, however, they aren't available here. Something about line in, line out...yada yada... I dunno.
But you can only send or recieve or... Something?
If you know any more, e mail me.

Re: The deal with the new server
Jenny,
I will try to send some money for the new server, but I have a question. Where does the money from the banner ads and the other advertising go? Couldn't that help pay for the new server?

Re: The deal with the new server
Oh! It does help... TONS!
Every bit of it helps!
This is a job with long hours and low pay. The server is one of many significant expenses in running a web site.
No one has to help here...
It's up to you, a personal decision.
Every little bit helps.

This is grand!

Thanks so much... Gotta go to sleep early.

Re: The deal with the new server
OK Jennie, my $20 just sent via PayPal - I can feel good that I did something positive today.
This is way better than the annoying OPB radio/TV fundraisers - and I get more out of ifish than OPB.
Hope to see the balance due come down more - come on lurker's -- or we will sic the OPB fundraiser dudes on you!

Re: The deal with the new server
I just posted another $20 to the server fund. That brings my total to $40. I think that puts me at the head of the line for that 5lbs of smoked feesh!
Anybody care to go $50 and take it away from me?

Re: The deal with the new server
Okeedokey here.
The deal.
Mind you, I do not have any interest in learning about the innards of these.. machines! The outards are enough for me!
I sent in your critique of his reccomendation and here is his reply:
----
Jeannie,
That recommendation was specifically that: A recommendation.
Your host may require that your machine be a specific number of Units high for colocation and not this machine which is a desktop.
If your board users can get you a better box, great - I was operating within a budget - I could spend a lot more but chose not to. Again - please feel free to think along the RAID, SCSI, CPU and RAM guidelines that I laid out and configure parts and service accordingly.
Thanks!
Regards,
Brett Harris

Re: The deal with the new server
i had to hunt around to find this thread and then find the link to the donations page. perhaps you should add a banner at the top of the pages for donations? anyway, happy to chip in my $20. i think i get more, better and faster access to fishing information than the guide's forecast reports or fishing and hunting news. $20 well spent.

Re: The deal with the new server
There is a link, both on the honors page up top, and at the top left, where it says, Ifish needs a new server... want to help? Or something like that.
