Smile Bear Down! For reals...

I can only take the credit for the shot...I had some great friends who took me along and found this guy!

After couple nights dreaming of getting out in the sticks after a bear, the day had come. I woke to a few clouds in the sky and bright sunny breaks every so often...perfect bear weather! Jody and his daughter Brook, along with good friend Jonathan, were along for the hunt. Unfortunately, right when we were able to head out at 4pm, the water turned on...and it rained solid the entire evening. Somewhat bummed the weather wasn't seeming to cooperate, and also not being able to glass several cuts because of fog or pounding rain, we still found ourselves out there most importantly, but we were also still glassing with every opportunity. With a two year old in tow to keep us entertained, we were having fun.

At about 630, I had (literally) no more than spoke the words, "I'm not sure bears like this weather any more than we do..." when Jody says, "Dude, I thinks there's a bear right there!" Sure enough, the binocs confirmed...on the far side of the cut was a black spot working its way out. With the rain still hammering us, John and I kicked into killing mode...no video camera, no packs...just binocs, a range finder and rifle! Some 20 minutes later we had snuck some 150 yards to a perfect setup. He was 220 yards away...the first shot was a good hit from what we could tell as the bear whirled and ran, a second shot on the move was uncertain, but as the bear slowed to a stop, the third shot put him down for good. It still amazes me how quickly a hunt can go from a rainy day with no game to a tag being punched...it only takes a second.

Rain or shine, blood or no blood, God blessed every part of our trip in so many ways and I'm grateful for friend's who share the same passion for His creation.

Here are some video stills after packing it to the top of the ridge...

Jonathan and I...

Jonathan handled the load most of the way...

Brook's not sure she wants to touch it...

But I was able to get a high-5 out of her!

And lastly, back in town the bear made it's transition from truck to trunk as I was on my way home from a business trip when this hunting "detour" took place.

Gotta give you credit for toughing it out in the rain...especially when hunting with a 2 year old along.

congrats

Now, now boys, lets not exaggerate! I can haul a decent load if I have to, but don't let GWH fool ya, he can pack a pretty rightous load himself...comes from the same superior gene pool. Jeff didn't do half bad himself on that pack...tallest bear I've ever seen! Great hunt Jeff, it was a blast.

*thread officially hijacked* (sorry JEFFDUNN)

Speaking of out of state...getting some spots dialed up here Jody (and Johnny-the-pack-mule)...need to catch up soon on some scouting reports. (All other hunters, ignore this transmission - the wolves have eaten ALL of the deer and elk in N. Idaho).

*And now back to your regularly scheduled brag post*

It's always great to spend some time out in the field with friends and then get to add a harvest on top of that is like frosting on a cake. Congrats on a great bear.

Sooo...you've never had bear veal?

Actually, Jeff, Jonathan, and Jody are 6'8", 7'1", and 6'10" respectively. And the bear weighed 325# dressed. The rain just makes it look smaller.

DougCo is so stinkin' filthy with bears, and you might say, we're more into cervid enhancement practices. As it should be with any elk hunter.

I'll go ahaed and report... I've been out twice and seen seven bears. I just got a photo from your neck of the woods and might venture over there to see what happens. I'm having a new gun built so i may wait for it to be completed before actually finding one for myself...We'll see, the right one will change my mind.

So does that mean you think my 25-06 is to small? And how much more energy does just about any rifle have compared to a bow?

Bows are not about energy like guns are.

It was maybe 150...but they can put on 100 more lbs by fall. Spring bears are smaller. It measured 5 ft exactly from nose to tail.

There are bigger bears in the woods, but as GWH put it, I'm part of the "cervid enhancement team".

I'm not sure, but I think maaaaybe you're being sarcastic?

For the rest of you lol...25-06 or .270 will kill any black bear with a good shot. And while my bullets aren't condusive to long range accuracy, we all know remington core lokts blow stuff UP.

By the way...Jod, John...after skinning that bear I found 3 holes...first shot center punched him right through the boiler room but hit no bone, 2nd shot on the move entered the top of his pelvis a little far back, and the third was right on top of his left shoulder headed right down through his chest and may have clipped backbone, hence, why that one dropped him. He wasn't going far though.

For the record I knew that shot placement is all that rely counts. because rely you could use a 22LR. and be fine if you just got close enough and hit it in the right spot [I'm not saying that I would do this just that it could be done].

From my experience, Jeff coulda rolled him with one shot if he'd have shot him with a basketball!
