Fishing the West
I spoke to the host larry at the washington sportsman show and he told me that they were planning on rerunning the show in the Portland area either in February or March. I was wondering if any one has seen the show or has any further info. I watched the show when I was growing up and would realy like to see them again.

Re: Fishing the West
I remember that show it was a great show I used to watch it all the time a long time ago. That would be really cool if they started showing it again.

Re: Fishing the West
Yes it would make my day. I forgot to mention in my first post that he said it would be on channel 4. I think I am not from the area so I don't know if that makes sense.

Re: Fishing the West
I was into that show until I heard how 'some' episodes were filmed. On slow days when only 1 or 2 fish were caught by other in his crew, they would tether the fish up a couple of hours to revive it, then he'd play it out...again...on film. Give me a break. All for 30 minutes of ACTION footage.

Re: Fishing the West
nice fish.....lucky larry always had to say that about all fish.....LOL.....was a cool show....but they were known for stretching the truth......the newer version....AOJ seems to be much better.....anyways.....i'd watch the show.....mainly cause it focused on northwest fishing adventures and not just bass.....

Good show when it was for the West. About all I remember is " THERE HE IS LARRY". Larry is still a class act....

Re: Fishing the West
I remember the shows, but I too don't like the idea of using a clothes hanger to show a fish being caught. I know that you can't always get the hook-up on tape, but just keep the camera rolling and edit later. I wouldn't mind seeing something more realistic than some of those shows.
I liked the N.W. portions of the show, but when he started traveling and fishing in New Zealand, South America, and Russia, I lost intrest. Sure it's nice to see shows about that, but if I'm watching a show about fishing than that means I want to LEARN something from it that I can use the next time I go out on the river. Not watch someone else catch Peacock Bass in Venizuallia.

Re: Fishing the West
Special day, special fish, special river, blah, blah, blah......the only thing I couldn't stand about Larry's show was Larry: Now here's the guide for this special trout water telling Larry exactly which fly will catch the trophy fish...of course Larry decides to try HIS fly... 20 minutes later Larry uses the guide fly AND CATCHES THE TROPHY TROUT! Why'd ya hire the guide larry if you aren't going to listen to him.
Great show when they changed hosts.

Re: Fishing the West
I used to enjoy the show growing up and when the truth came out on how episodes were filmed I was turned off forever. I could not watch "Lucky Larry?" again unless I was forced. Bunch of make-believe garbage. I agree with AOJ being much better. I'd like to see the Hot Tamale shows but Direct TV doesn't carry it. :depressed:

Re: Fishing the West
I used to watch it cause there were no other fishing shows. However the best fishing show there wver was was "lucky" Jim Conway's show. I remember they had a winter steelhead show on the Kalama they caught a fish cooked it right there on a gravel bar and ate it with thier fingers. That was an awsome show. Someone ought to get ahold of the old films and put them on video....

Re: Fishing the West
what i wouldn't give to have a regular show about fishing in the northwest (in addition to hot tamale, which i never seem to catch). i'm so tired of the best of bill dance if i see another bass, i'm gonna scream.

Re: Fishing the West
You know what, I met Larry at the Sitka airport a couple years back. A hell of a nice man, but.... We used to call him Larry the geek.It just didn't seem that he really deserved to be doing what he was doing. Like the sturgeon trip out of Ilwaco, and the deck hand tells him not to gaff the fish and pow, he gaffs him.A couple of his shows do stand out in my mind though. He fished an Oregon river with a female guide in a drift boat, the klickitat with the gotta go guide, and the trip in Alaska catching kings in the bay were classics. Thanks Larry for some good entertainment and really some of the better early fishing shows.

Re: Fishing the West
Like everyone else, I liked to watch that show just because it was about North West fishing.
The one feature I noticed and enjoyed was the between action shots of the location.
The animals, birds, scenery, nobody else did that, like they did.
I always thought, still do, that taking time to notice and enjoy being in the outdoors was a big part of my own experience.
As a side note....
When I was much younger I loved watching "The American Sportsman" with Curt Cowdy as the host, and well known cleb's of the day hunting & fishing all over the world.
There were two shows that still standout in my mind. Phil Harris and Bing Crosby wing shooting Dove's in New Mexico, the banter between those two was pricless!
The other was the Govenor of Texas at the time, sorry can't remember his name at the moment, hunting African Elephant. When he shot that huge Bull Elephant, it came straight up off the ground, all four feet at the same instant, and landed on it's side-never moved again!.
Course' you don't see shows like that anymore, every thing is so PC.

Re: Fishing the West
Larry's show had some good moments early on but towards the end there was nothing to learn from. When he started using the show to promote his travel business and fishing in all the places I'll never go, I quit watching it. It would be good to have a new show about NW fishing only AND have it broadcast so that those of us who refuse to pay for cable could watch it too. One of the best shows I remember was Doug Lamear's show on channel 8 just before he retired. He used local guides and fished local rivers. Oh well, dream on!

Re: Fishing the West
Like many of you I also watched Larry and Doug, some of those were great because I fished the same rivers. A guy that I always watch now is Grant McComey on channel 2. I wish he would make a 1/2 hr. show on just fishing with the local guides on our rivers, I would even volunteer to go as a weekly guest. I'm sure you folks would too.

Re: Fishing the West
My Dad, brothers and I to this day... use his catch line.... "Thats a niiiccceee one Larry" whenever we catch a small fish or something less than normal. Doug and Larry were very complimentary of each others catches.

Re: Fishing the West
Speaking of Jim Conway, I remember a show of his about the big Kings at Sekiu, Wa. they caught some real beauties and smoked and grilled them right on the dock at Olson's Resort. I told mama to bundle up the kids, hooked up the boat and headed for Sekiu. We had no idea where to fish or what to use. I asked a couple of black gents camped next to us what they were using. They told me herring mooched just off the bottom in 100 feet of water. So we headed out to 100 feet, mooched herring and boated a 37 pound and a 34 pound chinook. Not bad! The next day we went out and boated three more in the 35 pound class, called it a trip and went home happy. Before we left I saw the two old gents and thanked them for the advice. They were stunned. They said they had been fishing up there for a week and caught nothing. Beginner's luck? A month or so later I saw Jim Conway at Sauvie Island and went up and thanked him for doing the show on Sekiu. He replied " where?".
I told him I had seen his show on Sekiu, went up there and had a ball. He said he remembered doing the show but did not catch any fish the whole time they were there. He said it was all "footage" spliced in to make it interesting.
We had a good laugh on that one but still if he had not done the show I would never have heard of Sekiu. It became our favorite vacation spot in the 70's and 80's. Then I guess it went downhill. Does anyone know if it has come back at all? Used to be great in late July and August. I know Larry used footage in his shows, I saw some of it at his home. He has reels and reels of it and some of it is spectacular. But face it, if you are paying a crew to shoot a show you need action. How interesting is it to watch somebody's home movies of their fishing trip? Here's Joe casting, here's Joe reeling in,
oops Joe got snagged on the bottom. Here's Joe's back as he fights a King. "get that dang camera out of my way!" You know what I mean. I agree though bring on more northwest shows.

Re: Fishing the West
My favorite and the one that my brother and I still knock around is "Isn't that a beauty Larry".
Still makes both of us grin.
I think Larry was the only guy I know who actually looked fairly fashionable in those fishing sunglasses.

Re: Fishing the West
I too watched Larry every Sunday. It would be nice if someone would come up with a show on NW fishing. The AOJ show was good but I noticed some of the shows are on skiing. What's up with that? I will lose interest real fast.

I rented an old video of Larry fishing for salmon this week. The production was first class. Realized that I really liked the music and wildlife and non fish footage.

Scott,
Sorry. I didn't mean to forget your show. I always watch it. Good show. Any chance of getting on the major networks and improving your audio/video?

Re: Fishing the West
Rags...
Yeah I know...The picture quality & audio...once they hit YOUR screen are lousy. It's because it is the Bottom of the Barrel for AT&T! They PAY for Public access through their Franchise Fees thus they give it NO ATTENTION as far as Quality goes.
I'll tell you what though....The Video/Audio in the Studio are great
I'm Working on where this thing may go....we'll just have to wait & see...
